She also played the leading role in the romantic trilogy "The Kissing Booth."Childhood and Family
Joey Lynn King was born on July 30, 1999, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, Terry and Jamie King, raised their children without adhering to any specific religious teachings, as they practiced different faiths—Christianity and Judaism.Joey's father was an arm wrestling champion in his youth, even sought for advice by the famous Hollywood "muscleman" Sylvester Stallone. Joey has older sisters, Kelli (born in 1992) and Hunter (born in 1993), both of whom also became actresses. The younger sister believes they inherited their acting talent from their grandmother, theater actress Elaine Farrar. Joey was named after her grandfather, Joseph.
Movies and Television
Joey King began her acting career as a child, even though her parents didn't particularly expect a future in acting for her. At the age of four, she appeared in a breakfast cereal commercial, and over the next two years, she featured in around a hundred commercials. Her film debut came in 2006 with the release of the short film "Grace" and several episodes of the series "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," where the young actress met her teenage idols, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, which was like a divine revelation for her. During the filming of "Grace," Joey nearly drowned in icy water. Despite the drama of the situation, this episode in her life made her fall in love with cinema and decide to become an actress. Her early screen appearances were episodic but allowed her to leave an impression on audiences and work with renowned colleagues. For example, Joey's partner in "Ghost Whisperer" was Jennifer Love Hewitt, in "Medium" it was Patricia Arquette, and in her first feature film, the drama "Reign Over Me," she acted alongside Adam Sandler (unfortunately, all her scenes were cut during editing).
Success with other directors came after the premiere of the heartwarming comedy "Ramona and Beezus" (2010), where young Joey appeared alongside Selena Gomez. They played very different sisters – the older Beezus was confused by her first adult emotions, while the younger Ramona, with her rich imagination and overflowing energy, couldn't sit still. The role of Ramona earned Joey King the Young Artist Award. A year later, young Joey became a star of the series "Bent," playing 8-year-old Charlie, the daughter of a determined single mother Alex (Amanda Peet), whose husband had recently gone to prison.
In a short time, she worked with influential directors. This includes Christopher Nolan, whom Joey described as "incredibly detail-oriented" after he made her shave her head for "The Dark Knight Rises." Also among them are Sam Raimi, who was extremely patient with Joey during the filming of "Oz the Great and Powerful," and Roland Emmerich, the creator of the blockbuster "White House Down" (King played the daughter of Channing Tatum's character). King also works in voice acting: this includes the cartoons "Horton Hears a Who!" (2008) with Jim Carrey, and "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" (2009) with Queen Latifah and Ray Romano.
In 2014, she appeared in the series "Fargo." Viewers saw her as Greta Grimly, the daughter of police officer Gus, who investigates a series of strange events in the small town of Fargo.
The same year, she worked with two actor-directors – Zach Braff and James Franco. She played in Braff's family comedy "Wish I Was Here," where she got the role of the main character's daughter, played by Braff himself. In Franco's adaptation of William Faulkner's famous novel "The Sound and the Fury," she played the young wife of one of the Compson brothers. In 2016, Joey King again starred with Braff, this time in the comedy "Going in Style," where the main roles were played by Michael Caine and Alan Arkin.
At the beginning of 2018, the actress actively promoted the Netflix film "The Kissing Booth," participating in various shows and press conferences. In this touching romantic comedy, she transformed into high school student Elle Evans, who had never dated a boy. She organizes a charity "kissing booth" at school and unexpectedly kisses Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi), the older brother of her best friend Lee. According to the rules of her friendship with Lee, dating his brother is forbidden. Elle must choose between friendship and first love. The film became one of the most popular teen rom-coms on Netflix, quickly leading to a sequel. In the second part, released in 2020, Elle is already a senior. Noah is at Harvard, and the couple tries to maintain a long-distance relationship. A classic love triangle forms as Marco (Taylor Perez), a new student, shows interest in Elle. Meanwhile, she must decide which college to attend: Harvard, where Noah is, or Berkeley, where her best friend Lee plans to go, as they had long planned. In 2021, the final part of the trilogy was released, set during Elle's last summer before college. She spends time at the Flynn family's beach house, trying to enjoy carefree days. She must make a final choice between Berkeley and Harvard.
Besides the popular rom-com, the actress has tried various genres: from big-budget projects like James Franco's "Zeroville," where King starred alongside Seth Rogen, or the crime thriller "Bullet Train," where the actress had a supporting role, to, unfortunately, the unsuccessful horror film "Slender Man," in which Joey had a key role.
A significant project for King's career is the crime series "The Act," based on real events, where the actress starred alongside Patricia Arquette. It's a psychologically heavy story about a mother-daughter relationship: the mother suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy and convinces her perfectly healthy daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard that she is terminally ill. Gypsy believes she has a host of illnesses – from leukemia to muscular dystrophy – and moves exclusively in a wheelchair. But everything changes when an online acquaintance opens her eyes to the situation. Joey prepared extensively for the role: she watched videos of the real Gypsy, studying her speech and movements, met her in person, lost a lot of weight, and shaved her head. Every filming day, she spent four hours in the makeup chair and tried to stay in character after the shoot. "This was my most challenging role. I felt enormous responsibility, as I was portraying a real person with a tragic history," recalls Joey. The role of Gypsy earned her nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Other Projects
King doesn't limit herself to working in the film industry. Her first attempt to make a mark in music was in 2010 when Joey and her sister recorded the song "Ramona Blue." A year later, she released the solo single "Anything at All" and appeared in the music video for "Mean" by Taylor Swift, where one of the roles was given to King. Joey understands the importance of publicity for a successful acting career, so she created profiles on all popular social media platforms. For a while, she tried promoting her YouTube channel as a blogger but eventually abandoned it. However, she remains active on social media, where she has almost 3 million followers. In 2023, Joey appeared in another Taylor Swift music video, this time for the song "I Can See You."
Joey King's Personal Life
In 2017, Joey started dating the young Australian actor Jacob Elordi, with whom she co-starred in the romantic comedy "The Kissing Booth". She described working with her boyfriend as an indescribable experience. However, they broke up in 2018, so during the filming of the sequel and threequel, King had to keep personal matters separate from professional ones. "It was a wild experience, but honestly, it was truly a wonderful time because I learned a lot about myself and grew as an actress and a person," she later admitted. The series "The Act", which began filming in 2018, not only helped Joey establish herself as a talented dramatic actress but also brought her new love. Her partner, Steven Piet, was the executive producer of the project. Their relationship became public in November 2019, and in February 2022, Piet proposed to the actress, which she happily accepted. In August 2023, the couple got married. Joey is left-handed.Joey King Now
