Lewis Pullman Biography

Lewis Pullman proves that Hollywood nepotism doesn't always mean easy rides. Sure, he's Bill Pullman's son, but he's carved out his own space in the industry through raw talent and genuine charisma. Most audiences know him as Bob Reynolds, aka Sentry, from Marvel's blockbuster Thunderbolts, which kicked off a whole new era of Avengers.

Early Life and Family

On January 29, 1993, a kid was born in Los Angeles who'd eventually follow in his father's footsteps – but on his own terms. His dad is Bill Pullman, the '90s cinema icon best known as the president in Independence Day (1996). His mom, Tamara Hurwitz, is a professional dancer and choreographer, an artist through and through.

Lewis is the middle child of three siblings. Each went creative, just in wildly different directions. His older sister Maesa became a singer. His younger brother Jack took the most unexpected route – he's a puppeteer.

Their Los Angeles home was a place where creativity wasn't just accepted – it was expected. Their parents supported every artistic impulse but never pushed. Bill traveled for shoots constantly, but when he came home, he'd give Lewis the inside scoop on what making movies was really like. "Dad was my inspiration. I followed in his footsteps with complete passion," Lewis admitted later.

Education

By high school in Los Angeles, Lewis knew he was drawn to performing, but after graduating in 2011, he didn't head straight to acting classes. Instead, he enrolled in Warren Wilson College's social work program in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

For the next four years, he juggled studies, work, and his first film experiments. Days were spent studying sociology and psychology, evenings operating excavators for extra cash. "I figured if acting didn't work out, I'd become an excavator operator – solid profession," he joked years later.

During summer break in 2013, Lewis landed his first gig – a short film called The Tutor. It was terrifying and exhilarating, but he knew instantly – this was it. The next two summers, he spent his breaks on various short film sets, building experience and connections.

In May 2015, Pullman earned his social work degree, but he already knew he was heading down a different path. And fate threw him an opportunity almost immediately.

Acting Career

Like so many Hollywood stories, it all started with a lucky break. In September 2015, the parents of Lewis's school friend – directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the duo behind cult classic "Little Miss Sunshine" – were searching for a young actor for the Amazon Studios pilot "Highston" with Sacha Baron Cohen.

Lewis auditioned and landed the lead role of 19-year-old Highston Liggetts, whose imaginary friends turn out to be real celebrities. The pilot featured rapper Flea and basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. Critics praised it, but the show got axed after just one episode. Disappointing? Sure. But it gave Lewis a crash course in how TV really works.

Meanwhile, he kept busy with short films, honing his craft and splitting time between Los Angeles and his family's Montana ranch. But he didn't quit.

2017 brought several projects at once. The biggest was family western "The Ballad of Lefty Brown," starring Bill Pullman with Lewis playing his character's son. The chemistry between them? Naturally, pretty authentic.

That same year, he appeared in "Aftermath" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, British film "Lean on Pete," and sports drama "Battle of the Sexes" alongside Emma Stone and Steve Carell.

2018 became his breakthrough year. February saw the release of horror sequel "The Strangers: Prey at Night," following up the 2008 original. Lewis played one of the leads whose family becomes prey for masked psychopaths. The film pulled in $32 million on a $5 million budget – solid numbers for genre fare.

That October, he appeared in Drew Goddard's "Bad Times at the El Royale." This stylish neo-noir boasted an impressive ensemble: Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm. Lewis played Miles Miller, the mysterious hotel clerk at this California-Nevada border establishment.

The director later recalled the casting process: "We saw tons of actors, then Lewis walked in – and we just knew. Last time I had that feeling was with Chris Hemsworth in 'Cabin in the Woods.'"

In May 2019, Hulu dropped their adaptation of Joseph Heller's novel "Catch-22" from George Clooney. Lewis played Major Major Major – a character with an absurd name. The role was small but memorable, and critics noted his comedic chops.

Around the same time, Pullman appeared in indie thriller "Them That Follow" with Alice Englert.

2020 brought him a small role in the indie film "Pink Skies Ahead." Production began on "Top Gun: Maverick," though the premiere got pushed back several times due to the pandemic.

Finally, in May 2022, "Maverick" hit theaters. The film picked up 36 years after the original with Tom Cruise. Lewis transformed into Lieutenant Robert Floyd, a weapons systems officer. His character's a quiet guy with glasses who seems uncertain but shows his true colors when it counts.

The film became a phenomenon – $1.4 billion at the box office, universal love from critics and audiences. For Lewis, it was his ticket to Hollywood's big leagues.

At the same time, the actor was working on Amazon's "Outer Range," playing Rhett Abbott alongside Josh Brolin.

2023 added several notable roles to his filmography. There's Pastor Owen from the drama "The Starling Girl," a fraternity president from the thriller "The Line," and Kiefer from William Friedkin's final film "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial."

A highlight for Pullman fans came with Apple TV+'s miniseries "Lessons in Chemistry" starring Brie Larson. Lewis played Calvin Evans, a brilliant chemist and the love of the main character's life. The role earned him Emmy and Critics' Choice Award nominations.

In 2024, he appeared in the crime thriller "Skincare" and the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King's "Salem's Lot" from director Gary Dauberman, playing writer Ben Mears, who returns to his hometown only to discover it's been taken over by vampires.

Music

Music isn't just a hobby for Lewis – it's a second profession. In high school (around 2010), he and his classmates – vocalist Eden Brolin, keyboardist Freddie Raisch, and guitarist Dashel Thompson – formed the band Atta Boy.

In 2012, right after graduation, they recorded their debut album "Out of Sorts." A "quirky experiment," as Lewis himself called it. Then everyone scattered for college, and the band went dormant for eight years.

In late 2019, Lewis messaged everyone in the group chat: "Guys, there's gonna be a new album." In 2020, they released "Big Heart Manners." The album turned out more mature, with deeper lyrics about growing up and finding yourself.

Lewis Pullman's Personal Life

From September 2020 to August 2023, Lewis Pullman dated singer and actress Rainey Qualley, daughter of Andie MacDowell. Their first public appearance was at the "Top Gun: Maverick" premiere in May 2022.

As of early 2025, his heart belongs to model Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford. Rumors about the two dating first surfaced in January when Kaia was spotted at Lewis's birthday celebration at Salazar restaurant. In May, the couple was seen at the Broadway production of "The Picture of Dorian Gray," where witnesses say Kaia rested her head on Lewis's shoulder throughout the entire show.

Finally, in early September, they made their first public appearance as a couple at the premiere of "The Housemaid," which Pullman stars in.

Lewis Pullman Now

2025 has been a year of major achievements. April brought the premiere of "Thunderbolts," the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lewis transformed into Bob, a seemingly naive and defenseless young man with a dark past full of psychological trauma. By the film's end, he becomes Sentry, one of the most powerful superheroes and a member of the new Avengers team.

In an interview with Men's Health, Pullman candidly admitted:
Marvel always seemed like an unattainable realm to me, the cool kids' table you might not get invited to. And now I'm there.
In September, he received the "Breakout of the Year" award from IMDb at the Toronto International Film Festival. The honor came for his role in the historical musical "The Testament of Ann Lee." The film tells the story of Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker religious sect in the 18th century. Ann herself was played by Amanda Seyfried, with Lewis portraying her brother.

In 2026, he'll return as Sentry in "Avengers: Doomsday," one of Marvel's most anticipated films in years. Among his other upcoming projects: an adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt's bestseller "Remarkably Bright Creatures," the romantic comedy "Wishful Thinking," and the family project "Space Cadet 2."
