Nick Frost Biography

Nick Frost is a British comedian, actor, and screenwriter who's become famous for his dynamic partnership with Simon Pegg. Audiences first discovered him in the late '90s through the series "Spaced," then fell head over heels for his charismatic Ed in Edgar Wright's horror-comedy "Shaun of the Dead" five years later. Another role where Frost absolutely stunned everyone with his electrifying dance moves and natural charm was Bruce Garrett in James Griffiths' feel-good drama "Cuban Fury." The film was actually Nick's brainchild – he also served as executive producer on the project.

Childhood and Youth: London – Israel – London

When Nicholas was born to John and Trisha Frost in London in spring 1972, he was their long-awaited second child – a boy at last. His older sister died from an asthma attack when he was ten. Five years after losing their daughter, John and Trisha, who ran a design business, went bankrupt. They had to downsize and move, forcing Nicholas to drop out of school and start working.

He started as a courier, then landed a job waiting tables at a small restaurant near home. Before long, Nick was hosting celebrations and weddings at the same place. After saving up some money, Frost took off for Israel, where he spent two years living in a kibbutz (agricultural commune), focusing on painting. When he returned to London, the young man got work as a cook and bartender at a Mexican restaurant and shared an apartment with his roommate – aspiring comedian Simon Pegg.

The two young men struck up a genuine friendship that blossomed into a creative partnership. Frost and Pegg began crafting funny sketches, performance bits, and writing scripts together. Both shared a similar sense of humor and ironic take on reality, making their stand-up performances unforgettable.

Film Career

When the comedy series "Spaced," where Pegg played the lead role, needed an actor for Mike Watt, Simon immediately suggested Nick to director Edgar Wright.

Frost's comedic talent, which he showcased in "Spaced," caught the attention of other directors. He was quickly cast as Paul in "Black Books" alongside Dylan Moran.

At the same time, he played various roles in Tim Kirkby's comedy series "Danger! 50,000 Volts!"

Alongside their first TV roles, Frost and Pegg co-wrote the screenplay for John Reilly's short comedy "Danger! 50,000 Zombies!" Both screenwriters landed the lead roles in this parody film.

Nick's first major film role came in Edgar Wright's feature project, the comedy "Shaun of the Dead." His friend Simon Pegg played the lead and also helped create the screenplay.

This film launched the "Three Flavours Cornetto" trilogy, where the trio of friends – director and two actors – would reunite on set in 2007 and 2013.

Besides "Shaun of the Dead," the absurd comedy about surviving a zombie apocalypse, the trilogy includes "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End." The films are connected only by virtually the same main cast and the appearance of a Cornetto ice cream wrapper on screen. The plots and genres don't intersect.

In total, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg have over 25 collaborative projects, including short films and animated series they've voiced together.

An interesting experience for Frost was playing DJ Doctor Dave on a pirate radio show in Richard Curtis's musical drama "The Boat That Rocked." Bill Nighy – the embodiment of English gallantry – played the lead, but the company on the ship (the film set) was absolutely stunning, including Nick, Bill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans, Kenneth Branagh, and Jack Davenport. The film was warmly received by audiences who still remembered the sixties.

For a role in a film whose idea Nick pitched himself, he personally trained for seven months under the supervision of one of the world's best... dance teachers. What won't you do for love of art and the woman around whom the plot of "Cuban Fury" revolves? The actor admits he'd always wanted to star in a film where he could dance his heart out. Plus, it was important for Frost to do something completely different from his previous work. And according to critics, he succeeded completely.

Another landmark film for the big fan of Mikhail Bulgakov and Fyodor Dostoevsky, as Frost calls himself, was Robert B. Weide's comedy "Mr. Sloane," where Nick played the lead. His portrayal of this American-style "little man" story was incomparable.

In 2016, Nick and Simon founded their own production company, Stolen Picture. Under its banner, they released the comedy horror "Slaughterhouse Rulez" (2018), and the series "Out of Her Mind" and "Truth Seekers" (2020).

In the latter, Nick played the lead character Gus, an internet cable installer who's seriously into conspiracy theories in his spare time. Simon Pegg also appeared in the series as Gus's boss. Despite positive reviews, the show was canceled after the first season, as Nick Frost personally announced.

In 2018, the actor finished work on Stephen Merchant's "Fighting with My Family." Wrestling, which obsesses all family members played by Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, and Lena Headey, creates plenty of problems for Frost's character, Ricky Knight.

2019 brought the actor new roles. He played Argus in Dominic Brigstocke's historical comedy "Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans."

Alongside Elizabeth Berrington, Ben Chaplin, and Martin Ford, Nick Frost was involved in filming Joss Whedon's new sci-fi series "The Nevers," where Victorian-era women's unique abilities lead to a fight to save the world. The actor played Declan Orrun in the production. The premiere aired on HBO in 2021.

Nick dreams of adapting his graphic novel about the Homeless Swedish Mouse into an adventure animated film and trying his hand at major directing. When Frost was asked which directors he'd like to work with, he named seven, including Wes Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, and Steven Soderbergh.

Nick Frost's Personal Life

For years, the actor lived the bachelor life. Brief romances ended as quickly as they began. But in 2007, Nick met producer Christina, a Swedish native. Less than a year later, the couple made it official. And in 2011, Nick became the proud father of a little boy.

But the family bliss didn't last long: in 2013, Nick and Christina told friends they were separating, and in 2015 their marriage was officially dissolved. The actor won't comment on what happened or his relationship with his son, who remained in his mother's care.
Passion is a great 'secret weapon' for anyone. Passion, comedic talent, cooking skills, dancing ability – it all works brilliantly. I once wrote a novel to win over a girl. Granted, it was a spectacularly terrible book called 'An Alcoholic's Guide to the Holy Land.'
Only once in some interview did his best friend Simon let slip that Nick "married the queen of harpies." It seems fitting that the same year saw the release of Nick Frost's book titled "Truth, Half Truth and Little White Lies."

Nick Frost Now

In April 2025, Nick Frost fans got some exciting news. The actor was cast in HBO Max's upcoming Harry Potter series. Nick landed the role of Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts School.

"Thank you for trusting me with such a loyal, gentle, and brave half-giant as Rubeus Hagrid. Robbie, I promise I won't let you down," Frost wrote on social media, addressing the late Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the feature films based on J.K. Rowling's novels.

Since the showrunners plan to dedicate one season to each of the seven Harry Potter novels, the role of Hagrid will keep Nick busy for at least seven years.
