Divers examining the wreckage of the superyacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily, found the bodies of five passengers and are searching for another.
Rescuers described the operation as "challenging" because divers were limited to 12 minutes, the yacht sank at a depth of 50 meters, and access to the cabins was difficult due to debris.
The bodies of Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were found inside one of the cabins between two mattresses. The yacht, anchored near the Sicilian village of Porticello, not far from Palermo, a city in southern Italy, sank about a kilometer from the shore during a storm early Monday morning. Preliminary reports suggest a waterspout pulled the vessel under. The damage was localized: a nearby sailing yacht remained almost unscathed.
Lynch’s 57-year-old wife, Angela Bacares, managed to escape. She said they woke up at four in the morning when the yacht began to sink:
Fourteen other passengers managed to escape by boarding a lifeboat.I woke up around 4 AM because the boat was tilting heavily. At first, we were not worried, but then there was a powerful impact, the yacht's windows shattered, and chaos ensued.
Zoomboola.com reminds: 59-year-old Lynch was one of the most famous British entrepreneurs in the IT sector. He invited his friends for a yacht trip to celebrate winning a court case in the USA: he was acquitted of fraud charges. He faced a 25-year prison sentence, but the jury found him not guilty.
