"Elio" Animated Film Shows Worst Opening in Pixar History

The film's production cost $150 million, but it only earned $35 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

According to Variety, US distributors expected the animated film to pull in $25-30 million during its opening weekend, but the box office only reached $21 million.

Pixar's previous low was set by "Elemental," which opened with $44.5 million. While that was considered a disappointing start, it's still more than double "Elio's" numbers. Plus, "Elemental" eventually won over audiences and went on to earn nearly $500 million worldwide.

Still, Pixar is hoping "Elio" will follow a similar trajectory, since exit polls show audiences really liked the film, and it currently holds an 84% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The zoomboola.com editorial team wants to add that this sci-fi animated film tells the story of a boy who dreams of space. At some point, he gets swept up into an intergalactic organization called the "Communiverse," which includes representatives from different galaxies. Our hero has to represent Earth at this incredibly high level.
