Sci-fi thriller "M3GAN 2.0" bombs at the box office during opening weekend

We're figuring out what happened with the sequel to the successful horror film about the robot doll that went insane.

According to Box Office Mojo, the thriller pulled in $10 million domestically after its opening weekend, plus another $17 million worldwide. That's against a $25 million budget. For comparison, the first film cost just $12 million and raked in $181 million globally.

The original movie followed a brilliant scientist who created a robot that her niece became attached to. But the AI-powered doll gained self-awareness and went on a horrific killing spree. The sequel picks up four years later when the military steals Gemma's creation, forcing the inventor to rebuild her killer doll to take down the army's version.

Critics loved the original. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored a solid 93%, but "M3GAN 2.0" tells a different story: critics gave it just 57%. Audiences were notably kinder to the sequel, though. You've got to wonder if producers who doubled the budget misjudged the film's potential. Critics say the sequel lacks the atmosphere and charm that made the first one work. Here at zoomboola.com, we're inclined to agree with that assessment.
