Childhood, Youth, Family

Jason Segel was born on January 18, 1980, in Los Angeles, to parents Jillian and Alvin Segel. Jason has an older brother, Adam, with whom he had a rocky relationship, and a younger sister, Alison.

The family was multicultural: his father is Ashkenazi Jewish, and his mother is Catholic. His parents sent him, the middle child, to the Catholic school Harvard-Westlake, despite his father's Jewish faith being dominant in their home. Segel often jokes that he was raised as a "Jewish kid in a Catholic school," which gave him a unique perspective on the world and shaped his sense of humor.

Jason was always exceptionally tall for his age – by 13, he had already reached 6 ft 4 in (192 cm). This height made him stand out on the basketball court – he played for the school team at Harvard-Westlake, where his teammate was future NBA player Jason Collins. His height later became one of his distinctive acting traits.

Despite his success in basketball, Jason wasn't the typical popular student at school. His relationships with classmates were pretty strained. He felt like an outsider and spent his free time writing various stories and plays. These early creative experiments would lay the groundwork for his future screenwriting career. Another catalyst for his writing talent came from the nightmares he struggled with until he started recording his dreams.

As a teenager, Segel became interested in acting. He took his first steps in his acting career at a local puppet theater. This interest in puppets later led to his work on the film "The Muppets," where he served not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter.

When Jason turned 11, his mother, who supported his acting endeavors, began taking him to auditions. He was often the only kid auditioning for adult roles. This taught him not to fear looking ridiculous—a quality that would become one of his biggest assets in comedy.

He was also a regular participant in productions at the Palisades Playhouse theater. When discussing his other hobbies, Segel revealed why he pursued them:
At seventeen, I got the idea to learn to play the piano. And do you know why? To attract women's attention. I told girls that I wrote songs for Elton John, and they believed me! And then they started liking me.

First Roles

Jason's parents insisted that he go to college after school, but he was already so passionate about theater that he continued to work on stage. At eighteen, he made his film debut, appearing in three movies at once: "SLC Punk!" (Mike), "Dead Man on Campus" (Kyle), and "Can't Hardly Wait" (Matt).

Segel's big break came through his collaboration with Judd Apatow, who cast him in the lead role in the sitcom "Freaks and Geeks".
Jason Segel as Nick Andopolis
This marked Jason Segel's first major breakthrough. In this cult series, which aired from 1999 to 2000, he played Nick Andopolis – a charming but slightly awkward high school senior who dreams of becoming a professional drummer, despite clearly lacking the talent.

Nick became one of the show's most memorable characters – a tall, good-natured teenager who's constantly smoking weed and obsessed with the band Rush. His romantic storyline with the main character Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini) became one of the central plots of the series. One especially memorable scene has Nick serenading Lindsay with Styx's "Lady," perfectly capturing his character's awkwardness and sincerity.

Many of Nick's traits were written specifically for Segel. Showrunners Paul Feig and Judd Apatow recognized a unique blend of physical comedy and emotional depth in the young actor. Segel brought a lot of personal elements to the role – for example, his own passion for music.

Though the series ran for just one season (18 episodes), it became a launching pad for a whole generation of future stars, including Segel, James Franco, and Seth Rogen. Filming "Freaks and Geeks" also marked the beginning of Segel's long collaboration with Judd Apatow.

Jason worked with Apatow on several other projects: the sitcom "Undeclared" (Eric), the comedy "Knocked Up" (Jason), and the film "The Five-Year Engagement" (Tom Solomon).

Their most interesting collaboration was the romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," with Judd producing and Jason writing and starring. Jason later admitted that some storylines in the film were drawn from his personal experiences. For example, his character, Peter Bretter, wrote music for a musical and puppet show "Dracula" and broke up with his girlfriend while naked.

"How I Met Your Mother"

"How I Met Your Mother" was a defining project in Jason Segel's career. For nine seasons (2005–2014), he played Marshall Eriksen, a lovable lawyer from Minnesota, best friend to the main character, Ted, and husband to Lily. Producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, big fans of "Freaks and Geeks," invited him for this role. The cast also featured Jennifer Garner, Alyson Hannigan, and Cobie Smulders.

Marshall quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his perfect mix of childlike wonder and unwavering loyalty to family and friends. Marshall and Lily's love story became the heart of the entire series. Segel and Hannigan's chemistry was so authentic that fans held their relationship up as relationship goals.

Marshall delivered countless memorable moments—from his ridiculous dances and songs to the legendary slap bet with Neil Patrick Harris's character, his internal battle between corporate law and environmental activism, his hilarious superstitions, and his unwavering belief in ghosts and the Loch Ness monster (lovingly nicknamed Nessie).

The role of Marshall became Segel's calling card. Years after the show wrapped, fans still see him as Marshall first, and countless Marshall quotes have become part of pop culture. Segel has said time and again that Marshall was one of his most enjoyable roles, crediting both the amazing cast and the creative freedom the showrunners gave him.

The series won six Emmy Awards, received numerous prestigious nominations, and remains one of the top sitcoms. The actor admitted:
...when we finished filming 'How I Met Your Mother,' I was 34 years old, and I suddenly realized that for ten years, I hadn't done anything just for fun, even though I got immense satisfaction from work. I traveled to many countries but always stayed in the same hotels, attended the same press conferences, and everything blended into a blur! For those ten years, I didn't have a life of my own. When I looked around, all my friends were married, discussing brunches and other trivial stuff that was unfamiliar to me. In short, I'm trying to lead a more balanced life. Maybe act in one movie a year and travel more—looking for a way so that work doesn't take up all the space.

Further Career

Jason Segel nearly got his wish: when the series wrapped in 2014, he scaled back to a more relaxed schedule, despite being courted for leading roles.

Audiences loved his chemistry with Cameron Diaz in Jake Kasdan's comedy "Sex Tape," where they played a married couple looking to reignite their romance. When their intimate video accidentally syncs to all their friends' devices, the couple scrambles to delete the embarrassing footage.

In 2015, Segel starred in the biographical drama "The End of the Tour," playing writer David Foster Wallace. In the 2017 sci-fi thriller "The Discovery," he starred opposite Robert Redford, then joined Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson in the true-story drama "Our Friend" (2019). He played a man who moves in with friends to help a husband cope with his wife's terminal illness.

Sharing his impression of this work, Segel said:
I didn't try to perfectly capture the real Dane, since he's not a public figure, and this story is really a universal tale about friendship, support, and loss. I tried to find the traits in myself that Dane has and build my performance around those. Honestly, with films like this, the toughest question is: how vulnerable are you willing to be on camera? Can you just be present instead of trying to impress the audience or crew with big acting choices? I tried to approach it that way and stay as open as possible.
In 2020, Jason played the lead role in the drama "Dispatches from Elsewhere." He wrote the screenplay and served as a producer for the film. Two years later, Segel appeared in three films: the sports dramedy "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty" (as Paul Westhead), the drama "The Sky Is Everywhere" (as Big), and the thriller "Windfall."

Personal Life of Jason Segel

While filming the series "Freaks and Geeks," the actor met Linda Cardellini. They played a couple in love, and soon their on-screen romance blossomed into a real-life relationship that lasted until 2007 (about six years).

Their breakup inspired the script for the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The famous scene where Segel's character receives the breakup news while completely naked was partially based on real events.

Despite the painful breakup, they've maintained a professional relationship and never spoken ill of each other publicly. When the topic comes up in interviews, they always speak of each other with respect. Cardellini once admitted she found "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" hilarious but didn't hide that some moments hit close to home.

After his split with Linda, Jason briefly dated English actress Michelle Ryan and then was involved with Michelle Williams, who played Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn." Their relationship was on-and-off — the actors lived in different cities and couldn't see each other for long stretches. They broke up after a year.

Jason was rumored to be romantically linked with Drew Barrymore, Lindsay Lohan, Bojana Novakovic, and Cameron Diaz. However, his longest relationship was with artist Alexis Mixter. They made their relationship public in 2016 at a charity event hosted by Sean Penn.

It turns out they'd been dating for three years already. Fans started buzzing about a possible wedding because the couple seemed so happy together. So Mixter's announcement of their breakup in 2021 came as a shock:
We've lived so much together, this guy and I, changed each other so deeply... It's all for the best. I never expected our connection to be so strong. I've never spent as much time with anyone else, shared so many experiences, cried and laughed so much. It feels strange writing about the end of our relationship. Our friendship continues. But changes happen. So we decided to let our relationship evolve from what it was to what it is now.

Surprisingly, this unconventional method begins to help his patients more effectively than any previous techniques. But Jimmy still struggles with his own grief, and his mentor Paul, brilliantly portrayed by Harrison Ford, steps in to help. Together, they navigate an unexpected and challenging path toward healing.
