Childhood, Youth, Family

Jason Segel was born on January 18, 1980, in Los Angeles, to parents Jillian and Alvin Segel. Jason has an older brother, Adam, with whom he didn't get along well, and a younger sister, Alison.

The family was multicultural: his father is Ashkenazi Jewish, and his mother is Catholic. His parents sent him, the middle son, to a Catholic school Harvard-Westlake, despite the dominance of his father's religion in home upbringing. Segel often jokes that he was raised as a "Jewish kid in a Catholic school," which gave him a unique perspective on the world and shaped his sense of humor.

Jason was always extraordinarily tall for his age – by 13, he had grown to 6 ft 4 in (192 cm). This feature made him stand out on the basketball court – he played for the school team at the private school Harvard-Westlake, where his teammate was future NBA player Jason Collins. His height later became one of his distinctive acting traits.

Despite his success in basketball, Jason wasn't the typical popular student at school. His relationships with classmates were rather strained. He felt like an outsider and spent his free time writing various stories and plays. These early creative experiments laid the foundation for his future career as a screenwriter. Another building block for his literary talent was the nightmares he unsuccessfully battled until he started recording his dreams.

As a teenager, Segel became interested in acting. He took his first steps in his acting career at a local puppet theater. This interest in puppets later led to his work on the film "The Muppets," where he served not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter.

When Jason turned 11, his mother, who supported his acting endeavors, began taking him to auditions. He was often the only child trying to land adult roles. This taught him not to fear looking ridiculous—a quality that later became one of his main assets in comedic roles.

He was also a regular participant in productions at the Palisades Playhouse theater. When discussing his other hobbies, Segel revealed why he pursued them:
At seventeen, I got the idea to learn to play the piano. And do you know why? To attract women's attention. I told girls that I wrote songs for Elton John, and they believed me! And then they started liking me.

First Roles

Jason's parents insisted that he go to college after school, but he was already so passionate about theater that he continued to work on stage. At eighteen, he made his film debut, appearing in three movies at once: "SLC Punk!" (Mike), "Dead Man on Campus" (Kyle), and "Can't Hardly Wait" (Matt).

Success came to Segel through his collaboration with Judd Apatow, who invited him to play the lead role in the sitcom "Freaks and Geeks".
Jason Segel as Nick Andopolis
This was the first significant breakthrough in young Jason Segel's career. In this cult series, which aired from 1999 to 2000, he played Nick Andopolis – a charming yet slightly awkward high school senior who dreams of becoming a professional drummer, despite his obvious lack of talent.

Nick became one of the most memorable characters on the show – a tall, good-natured teenager who constantly smokes weed and is obsessed with the band Rush. His romantic storyline with the main character Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardellini) became one of the central plots of the series. An especially memorable scene is when Nick sings a serenade to Lindsay – the song "Lady" by Styx, showcasing the awkwardness and sincerity of his character.

Many of Nick's traits were written specifically for Segel. Showrunners Paul Feig and Judd Apatow saw a unique combination of physical comedy and emotional depth in the young actor. Segel brought a lot of personal elements to the role – for example, his own passion for music.

Although the series lasted only one season (18 episodes), it became a launchpad for a whole range of future stars, including Segel, James Franco, and Seth Rogen. Filming "Freaks and Geeks" also marked the beginning of Segel's long collaboration with Judd Apatow.

Jason worked with Apatow on several other projects: the sitcom "Undeclared" (Eric), the comedy "Knocked Up" (Jason), and the film "The Five-Year Engagement" (Tom Solomon).

An interesting collaboration for them was the romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," where Judd was the producer, and Jason was the screenwriter and lead actor. Jason later admitted that some storylines in the film were drawn from his personal experiences. For example, his character, Peter Bretter, wrote music for a musical and puppet show "Dracula" and broke up with his girlfriend while naked.

"How I Met Your Mother"

"How I Met Your Mother" was a defining project in Jason Segel's career. For nine seasons (2005–2014), he played Marshall Eriksen, a lovable lawyer from Minnesota, best friend to the main character, Ted, and husband to Lily. Producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, big fans of "Freaks and Geeks," invited him for this role. Joining Jason were Jennifer Garner, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders.

His character became a favorite among viewers due to his blend of childlike innocence and devotion to family and friends. The story of Marshall and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) became the focal point of the entire series. The chemistry between Segel and Hannigan was so convincing that many viewers considered their relationship the standard for couples.

Segel's portrayal of Marshall was memorable for many standout moments, including his goofy dances and songs, slap bet with Neil Patrick Harris's character, the struggle between a career as a corporate lawyer and the dream of environmental protection, amusing superstitions, and belief in ghosts and the Loch Ness monster (which he affectionately calls Nessie).

The role of Marshall became Segel's calling card. Even years after the series ended, fans associate him with this character, and many of Marshall's lines and jokes became part of pop culture. The actor repeatedly stated that this role was one of the most enjoyable in his career, largely thanks to the wonderful cast and the creative freedom given by the show's creators.

The series won six Emmy Awards, received numerous prestigious nominations, and remains one of the top sitcoms. The actor admitted:
...when we finished filming 'How I Met Your Mother,' I was 34 years old, and I suddenly realized that for ten years, I hadn't done anything just for fun, even though I got immense satisfaction from work. I traveled to many countries but always stayed in the same hotels, attended the same press conferences, and everything blended into a blur! For those ten years, I didn't have a life of my own. When I looked around, all my friends were married, discussing brunches and other trivial stuff that was unfamiliar to me. In short, I'm trying to lead a more balanced life. Maybe act in one movie a year and travel more—looking for a way so that work doesn't take up all the space.

Further Career

Jason Segel almost fulfilled his desire: after the series ended in 2014, he shifted to a more measured work pace, even though he was mostly invited for lead roles.

For example, audiences highly appreciated his partnership with Cameron Diaz in Jake Kasdan's comedy "Sex Tape," where they played a married couple trying to spice up their sex life. Their home video accidentally reached all their friends' mobile devices, and the couple tries to delete the unfortunate clip.

In 2015, Segel starred in the biographical drama "The End of the Tour," playing writer David Foster Wallace. In the 2017 mystical thriller "The Discovery," he worked alongside Robert Redford, and with Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson, he appeared in the drama based on true events titled "Our Friend" (2019). He played a man who moves in with friends to help one cope with the impending death of his wife.

Sharing his impression of this work, Segel said:
I didn't try to perfectly portray the real Dane, because he's not a widely known character, and this story is quite a universal tale about friendship, support, and loss. I tried to find in myself the traits that Dane has and built my role around them. Honestly, in such films, the hardest question is: how honest are you willing to be in front of the camera? Are you able to do nothing or as little as possible instead of trying to impress the audience or the crew, fully engaging as an actor? I tried to set myself like this and remain as free as possible.
In 2020, Jason played the lead role in the drama "Dispatches from Elsewhere." He wrote the screenplay and served as a producer for the film. Two years later, three films featuring Segel were released: the sports dramedy "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty" (Paul Westhead), the drama "The Sky Is Everywhere" (Big), and the thriller "Windfall."

Personal Life of Jason Segel

While starring in the series "Freaks and Geeks," the actor met Linda Cardellini. They played a couple in love, and soon the on-screen romance turned into a real-life relationship that lasted until 2007 (about six years).

Their breakup inspired the script for the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The famous scene where Segel's character receives the breakup news while completely naked was partially based on real events.

Despite the painful breakup, they maintain professional relations and never speak ill of each other publicly. When the topic came up in interviews, they always spoke of each other with respect. Cardellini once admitted that she found "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" very funny but didn't hide that some moments were painful for her.

After his split with Linda, Jason briefly dated English actress Michelle Ryan and then was involved with Michelle Williams, who played Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn." Their relationship was intermittent — the actors lived in different cities and didn't see each other for long periods. They broke up after a year.

Jason was rumored to have romantic links with Drew Barrymore, Lindsay Lohan, Bojana Novakovic, and Cameron Diaz. However, his longest relationship was with artist Alexis Mixter. They made their relationship public in 2016 at a charity event hosted by Sean Penn.

It turned out they started dating three years earlier. Fans began to talk about their upcoming wedding because the couple seemed so happy together. Therefore, Mixter's announcement of their breakup in 2021 was unexpected:
We have lived so much together with this guy, changed each other so deeply... It's all for the best. I didn't expect our connection to be so strong. I haven't spent as much time with anyone else, shared so many experiences, cried, and laughed so much. I feel strange writing about the end of our relationship. Our friendship continues. But changes happen. And we decided to let our relationship evolve from what it was to what it is now.

Jason Segel Now

In 2023, viewers were introduced to a new comedy series, "Shrinking," where Segel stars as the main character, therapist Jimmy. Grieving his wife's death, Jimmy spirals into alcoholism, nearly destroying his relationship with his teenage daughter and his practice. Once he regains control, he decides to tell his patients nothing but the truth, disregarding medical ethics and sparing no one's feelings.

Surprisingly, this unconventional method begins to help his patients more effectively than any previous techniques. However, Jimmy struggles to cope with his own grief, and mentor Paul, brilliantly portrayed by Harrison Ford, steps in to help. Together, they navigate a challenging and unexpected path to healing. Viewers believe "Shrinking" marks an important milestone in Segel's career—transitioning from a purely comedic actor to more complex dramatic roles.
