Mia Goth is an English actress and model with a distinctive appearance, known for her roles in "A Cure for Wellness," "Suspiria," and the horror trilogy by Ti West ("Pearl," "X," and "MaXXXine"). Her impressive career began with an appearance in Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac."Childhood and Youth
Mia Gypsy Mello da Silva Goth was born in the London borough of Southwark in November 1993. When Mia was still a child, the family moved to Brazil, her mother's homeland, where her grandparents lived: American artist and musician Lee Jaffe and Brazilian actress Maria Gladys.Mia spent the first five years of her life in Rio, living with her maternal grandparents. It was her grandmother who first introduced her to the world of cinema, often taking her to film sets. It was at that moment that the girl realized she wanted to become an actress. Later, Mia and her parents moved to Canada, her father's homeland, where the family lived on a farm for a while. Before 12-year-old Mia and her family finally settled in London, she attended seven different schools.
Goth got her first job in London: at the age of 14, representatives from the well-known agency Storm Model Management noticed her. She collaborated with brands like Miu Miu and Prada and appeared on the pages of Vogue.I knew I wouldn't stay anywhere for long, so I started experimenting with my 'character' to fit in. I changed my behavior and embellished facts about my life. Looking back, this was my first encounter with acting. I explored different facets of myself, amplifying some, toning down others, and seeing how they related to the world around me.
Career
Mia's first appearance in cinema was in Lars von Trier's controversial erotic drama "Nymphomaniac" (2013). In the "The Gun" chapter, Goth played P, a 15-year-old daughter of criminals – a lonely and vulnerable girl who quickly becomes attached to the main character Joe (actress Charlotte Gainsbourg). "I was 18, and this film changed my life. Trier showed me the direction. I am still grateful to him," Mia recalls. Her striking debut, with a memorable appearance, caught the attention of other directors – Mia started getting more offers. In 2013, Goth played Sophie Campbell in three episodes of the British-French crime series "The Tunnel." The next year, Mia appeared in the music video for Future Unlimited's song "Haunted Love," directed by her "Nymphomaniac" co-star and boyfriend Shia LaBeouf. Later, she appeared in Stephen Fingleton's short film "Magpie," working alongside actors Martin McCann, Olivia Williams, and Paul Kennedy. 2015 was a successful year for Mia. She landed the lead role in the British post-apocalyptic thriller "The Survivalist," where she worked again with McCann and director Fingleton. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received positive reviews from critics. Goth also had a small role as Hannah Helmqvist in one episode of the British TV series "Wallander," based on Henning Mankell's novels. She considers it a great opportunity to appear in the adventure film "Everest," based on true events. In it, Goth played Meg, the daughter of Dr. Beck Weathers (actor Josh Brolin). The main roles were played by Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington, and Michael Kelly. In 2015, Goth was cast in the lead role in the horror film "A Cure for Wellness" with Dane DeHaan, directed by Gore Verbinski. The film was released domestically at the end of March 2017, receiving mixed reactions from audiences and critics. However, most journalists found Goth's performance convincing and her appearance well-suited for the genre. In 2017, Goth worked on three films: the thriller "Marrowbone" (dir. Sergio G. Sánchez), the horror film "Suspiria" with Chloë Grace Moretz, Tilda Swinton, and Dakota Johnson in the lead roles, and the sci-fi film "High Life" by Claire Denis, which also starred Robert Pattinson and Patricia Arquette. Goth found "Suspiria" the most challenging of these three projects, a dark tale about a ballet school occupied by witches. "I had no dance training at all, so I had to learn a completely new form of art from scratch," the actress said.Mia described her most inspiring role as Harriet Smith in the Victorian-style tragicomedy "Emma" (2020) – a modest girl who was supposed to marry a farmer but ended up without a match due to her friend, the audacious matchmaker Emma (Anya Taylor-Joy). "Harriet is unlike anyone I've ever played. She comes from a world I don’t understand well. But her essence touched me deeply," Goth characterized this experience. In 2022, the first part of the "X" trilogy by independent horror director Ti West was released. Mia Goth played the lead role, an aspiring porn star from the 70s named Maxine. She and her crew travel to rural America to shoot a groundbreaking film for her career, unaware of what lies ahead. Notably, Mia also transformed into the film's main antagonist. The second part, "Pearl", which is chronologically the first, followed, with Goth also co-writing the screenplay. In 2023, the actress played one of the main roles in Brandon Cronenberg's horror film "Infinity Pool" – another provocative and aesthetically stunning movie in Mia Goth's filmography. This time, she was joined on set by Alexander Skarsgård. The actress dreams of working with Tom Hardy, Joaquin Phoenix, or Michael Fassbender. "I feel drawn to actors who work with dark, grim material – the darker, the better."
Mia Goth's Personal Life
On the set of "Nymphomaniac," Mia met "Hollywood bad boy" Shia LaBeouf, who landed the role by sending the director a video of his genitals. The actors quickly discovered they shared many interests: they both love alternative music, charity shops, and traveling. "She is sharp-tongued and funny—just the way Shia likes," wrote foreign sources. Soon, Goth and LaBeouf started dating. In March 2015, during Paris Fashion Week, Goth was spotted with a large diamond ring on her ring finger. A year and a half later, in October 2016, the actors married in a small chapel in Las Vegas. The wedding cost only about $700. Both are impulsive people with their own worldview, so their relationship is far from idyllic. Once, fans of the star couple witnessed their argument at a German airport, after which LaBeouf admitted he nearly killed his beloved: "She spat directly into my soul!" In 2018, the couple filed for divorce. But two years later, they were seen together again—wearing wedding rings. In the spring of 2022, Mia and Shia became parents—their daughter, Isabel, was born.Mia Goth Now
