Childhood

Sophie Turner was born in Northamptonshire, but when she turned two, the family moved to Warwickshire. The actress's mother, Sally Turner, was a nursery school teacher working with children with special needs. Her father, Eddie Turner, owned his own business.

Sophie was watched over by her older brothers James and Will, and she remembers her childhood as pure fun: "We had a pigsty, barns, and a pen, and we took every chance to play in the mud."

Sophie admitted that she lost her "other half" before she was born. When Sally Turner became pregnant for the third time, doctors gave the future parents exciting news — they were expecting twins. But something went wrong, and one of the twins didn't make it.

In her early childhood, the actress suffered from trichotillomania and once completely plucked out her eyelashes. As she grew older, she burned all the childhood photos where she appeared without eyelashes.

At the age of three, Sophie was already acting in the Playbox children's theater troupe. "There was an incredible atmosphere there. In the theater, they didn't mold a child into an actor; they let them be themselves," the future Hollywood star recalled of her first stage experience.

Turner attended Warwick Primary School, where she was also actively involved in the children's drama club. The highlight of her school theater days was the production of 'The Wizard of Oz', where the young actress played the Scarecrow.

When Sophie turned 11, she transferred to King's High School for Girls, where she found her best friend, India. She continued attending classes at Playbox, and it was there that her acting teacher told the students about a casting call for a major HBO project.

"Game of Thrones"

In 2011, 15-year-old Sophie Turner stepped into the role of Sansa from House Stark. Landing a spot in the main cast of television's most ambitious project meant the young actress had to transform her blonde locks into fiery red. The new hair color suited her so well and looked so perfect on her that she never went back.

Sophie completely merged with her character: "Sansa and I grew up together. Reading the scripts, I'd cry whenever something terrible happened to her. There is a real connection between us — I feel everything she feels."

The young actress auditioned alongside Maisie Williams, who landed the role of Sansa's younger sister, Arya Stark. On set, Sophie found two more friends — Natalie Dormer and Lena Headey.

After wrapping the first season, based on George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire," the star adopted the dog that played her direwolf Lady and named her Zunni.

"Game of Thrones" not only made the young Brit a global star and earned her several nominations for prestigious awards, but also gave her financial independence — Sophie now owns her own apartment in London.

Turner admits she rarely watches her own films because she's incredibly critical of her performance. When her parents, who are devoted fans of "Game of Thrones," watched a new episode, she would have to leave the room.

As success took off, Sophie Turner had to work with tutors remotely; between filming, she'd complete her homework and send it back to school. After graduating from King's High School, the young star planned to continue her education at university — the actress felt she hadn't "reached the point in her career where she could step away from acting to focus on studying" and intended to study history or psychology in higher education.

Early in her career, the actress found red carpets the most "terrifying and demoralizing" experience in the world. At first, she felt uncomfortable and shy about posing, so her stylist would joke that Sophie needed to attend "Teaching Celebrities to Stand Properly" school.

In April 2019, the final season of "Game of Thrones" premiered. Sophie's character, Sansa Stark, had completely transformed by the final episodes — gone was the naive "little bird," as the Hound called her.

Further Career

In 2013, Turner took on the lead role in the thriller "Another Me," adapted from Catherine MacPhail's novel of the same name. In the same year, she appeared in "The Thirteenth Tale" as Adeline.

In 2015, director Kyle Newman cast Turner in his action-adventure film "Barely Lethal." She starred alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In 2016, while filming the sixth season of "Game of Thrones," Turner also appeared in "X-Men: Apocalypse," starring opposite Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Turner took on the role of Jean Grey, a powerful telepathic mutant.

Turner continued exploring diverse roles, starring as the lead in 2017's thriller "Josie." Turner completely transformed from her familiar "Game of Thrones" persona: trading her red hair for blonde and mastering a Southern accent for the film's Southern US setting. The story follows Dylan McDermott as Hank, a lonely security guard living in isolation at a trailer park. His peaceful routine gets disrupted when the enigmatic Josie moves in next door.

2019 brought the next X-Men installment, "Dark Phoenix." The story centered on Turner's Jean Grey/Phoenix as she develops devastating new superpowers. Unfortunately, the film failed to impress both audiences and critics. Most notably, it botched the adaptation of one of comics' most beloved storylines – the "Dark Phoenix Saga." The script felt shallow and predictable, failing to capture the source material's emotional depth.

The movie also struggled to give Jean Grey proper character development. Both her motivations and the main villain's arc felt unconvincing. The film barely broke even at the worldwide box office: $252 million against a budget of $200 million.

In April 2020, Turner revealed she'd jump at the chance to reprise Jean Grey:
I don't even know if Disney wants to continue the 'X-Men' story. I am always happy to return to this character, to this cast, and to this experience... we had a great time working on these films. I would kill to come back.
After becoming a first-time mom, Sophie didn't step away from her career but started taking on fewer roles. In 2022, she appeared in the miniseries "The Staircase" with Colin Firth. Alongside Maya Hawke, she starred in the feature comedy "Do Revenge," and with Corey Hawkins in the thriller "Survive." The short film of the same name was released back in 2020, and producers later decided to develop it into a series.

Sophie Turner's Personal Life

For years, the actress had a go-to response whenever journalists asked about her love life: "Do I really have time for guys?" But the press wasn't buying it—with her looks and star power, they figured she had to be dating someone. Reporters constantly tried linking Sophie to her "Game of Thrones" co-stars, such as Jack Gleeson and Kit Harington.

In 2014, word broke that Sophie was dating James McVey, the guitarist and backing vocalist of the indie pop band "The Vamps." The musician revealed they'd connected on Twitter. The young couple was often seen at various festivals and parties. But neither Sophie nor James ever confirmed whether their friendship turned romantic.

In 2016, Turner was spotted with a new boyfriend, American singer Joe Jonas. The couple made their first public appearance together at the MTV EMA music awards. In late 2017, Joe and Sophie announced their engagement. The couple keeps their private life pretty much under wraps.

Reports said the couple tied the knot in June 2019 in France. But they actually pulled a fast one on everyone, secretly getting married in May at Vegas's famous White Chapel. After the wedding, Sophie took her husband's last name and became Mrs. Jonas. They still went ahead with the French ceremony—an intimate celebration with close friends and family on June 29 at the Le Château de Tourreau estate.

On September 5, 2023, news broke that Jonas was filing for divorce, citing that "the marriage between the parties being irretrievably broken." The next day, both published a statement on social media to their fans:
After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculations about the reasons, but this is truly a joint decision, and we sincerely hope everyone respects our wishes for privacy for the sake of us and our children.
On September 21, Turner filed court papers seeking to relocate their children to England with her. She demanded "the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained" by their father. According to the documents, before the divorce they'd agreed to stop splitting time between countries and settle in England, selling their Miami property and buying a home in the English countryside. When Jonas filed for divorce, Sophie wanted to stick to the plan, but he refused to let the girls move or give their passports to her. Jonas called his ex-wife's rhetoric "misleading":
This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending. When language like 'abduction' is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted.
By early 2024, Sophie had withdrawn the lawsuit after they reached a parenting agreement. On September 6, 2024—exactly a year after announcing their split—they finalized their divorce agreement.

In an October 2024 Harper's Bazaar interview, Sophie opened up about how much she missed home while living with Jonas in the States and how thrilled she was to return to England:
I'm so happy to be back. I never feel like myself when I'm not in London.
Just months after her split from Jonas in October 2023, Sophie was spotted on a Paris date with Peregrine Pearson, who hails from British aristocracy. By December, the pair were photographed sharing a kiss in London. They made their official debut as a couple on February 11, 2024, at a Lunar New Year celebration at London's Dixie Queen club.

Sophie Turner Now

Turner made her screen comeback in fall 2024, starring in The CW's crime miniseries "Joan." She portrays real-life jewelry thief Joan Hannington. The role sees her effortlessly switching accents, wigs, and appearances to pull off audacious heists.

Speaking to The Sunday Times Culture Magazine, Turner revealed why the role resonated so deeply:
Joan changed me completely. Desperation creates incredible drive and ambition. Filming coincided with a time in my life when I needed to be ambitious, strong-willed, and fight my circumstances. Joan gave me so much strength.
February 2024 brought news that Turner would reunite with Kit Harington for horror film "The Dreadfult," with both actors set to star.
