Caleb Landry Jones Biography

Caleb Landry Jones is an American film and television actor and musician who's appeared in more than 20 films and TV series since 2007. Jones first gained recognition in 2011 after appearing in the latest "X-Men" franchise installment.

His second wave of popularity hit in 2017 with the release of "Get Out" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." This charismatic redhead with his distinctive looks and equally distinctive screen personas is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's major rising stars.

Family and Early Years

Caleb was born on December 7, 1989, in Garland, Texas, to parents Patrick and Cindy Jones. He's an only child. A few years later, the Jones family moved to nearby Richardson in Dallas County, where Caleb attended school and spent his childhood.

During his school years, Caleb got into music. He eventually formed a band called Robert Jones Band with his friend Robert Hudson, serving as both vocalist and drummer. The duo played experimental folk music. His parents supported Caleb's passion, with his father even buying a drum kit for the band.

In high school, Jones also developed an interest in acting and began teaching himself the craft. After graduation, he decided to try his luck in Hollywood and moved to Los Angeles to study acting.

Looking back on his Richardson years, Jones speaks warmly about the experience. He's noted that small Texas towns have a unique atmosphere and local mentality that sets them apart from other U.S. regions, even neighboring ones – like they're their own distinct world.

Jones spent time writing his own folk songs, and after Robert Jones Band dissolved when his friend headed off to college, he tried pursuing music solo. He later called this period "the most wonderful chapter because I learned I could actually do this" in an interview.

Acting Career

Caleb didn't have to wait too long for his acting debut: in 2007, he appeared in the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning thriller "No Country for Old Men," though in the small role of "boy on bicycle." His parts in several subsequent films ("The Outsiders," David Fincher's "The Social Network," and others) were also minor, so Caleb's screen appearances went largely unnoticed by audiences.

Jones landed a more substantial role in the superhero saga spin-off "X-Men: First Class" (2011), where he played one of the mutants named Banshee, who possessed the ability to fly and create supersonic waves. After appearing in this popular franchise alongside stars like Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, he started receiving many more casting offers.

In 2012, the young actor made his mark with three projects — Neil Jordan's "Byzantium" starring Saoirse Ronan, the thriller "Antiviral" by David Cronenberg's son Brandon, and the crime drama "Contraband," where Caleb starred alongside Mark Wahlberg. These were significantly more prominent roles than before, and each one was uniquely unconventional: for instance, in "Byzantium," Caleb played a guy dying of leukemia who becomes the object of a young vampire's affection (Saoirse Ronan), while in "Antiviral," he portrayed a madman who traffics in celebrity viruses.

Over the next three years, Caleb appeared in several more films, but not all of them found their audience. The standout here was probably Xavier Dolan's drama "Tom at the Farm" (2013), where Jones played Guillaume. Even then, compared to the talented Canadian's other work, this one didn't quite hit the mark.

Caleb Jones truly got to showcase his talents — if not completely, then at least as brilliantly as possible — in 2017, which became his breakout year. He appeared in what's been called the best modern horror film — the youth horror "It Follows" starring Maika Monroe. And in Martin McDonagh's drama "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," Caleb played a quirky advertising executive who provokes righteous anger from the "dumb cop" played by Sam Rockwell. His scenes in the latter film had audiences laughing through their tears.

On top of all that, Jones appeared in "The Florida Project," celebrating childhood innocence and carefree spirit, and the long-awaited continuation by David Lynch of the cult series "Twin Peaks." In several episodes of the show, Caleb revealed his "dark side" and made viewers shudder, playing the deranged drug addict Steven, who seriously frays the nerves of his girlfriend Rebecca (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of waitress Shelly (Mädchen Amick).

All four films featuring the actor were well-received by both audiences and critics, with three of them earning Oscar nominations and other prestigious film awards. They were also nominated for several other cinematic honors, including "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture" from the Screen Actors Guild and "Best Acting Ensemble" from the National Board of Review.

Also in 2017, Caleb landed a supporting role in the crime action film "American Made" with Tom Cruise, playing one of America's wealthiest men, pilot Barry Seal.

2018 brought the first premiere featuring the distinctive Caleb Jones – the thriller "Welcome the Stranger," where the actor starred alongside rising stars Abby Lee and Riley Keough. This mystical drama about the complex and mysterious relationships between a guy named Ethan, his girlfriend, and his sister struck critics as overly pretentious and undeserving of the attention its creators were desperately seeking.

But from that point on, Caleb Landry Jones' name increasingly topped cast lists. He scored leading roles in the crime drama "Friday's Child" with Tye Sheridan and Imogen Poots, and the Austrian-American drama "Come to Daddy," where he was paired once again with Abby Lee.

2019 kicked off with Jones heading off to "war" in Afghanistan – though only on a film set. He played real-life hero Sergeant Ty Carter in the military drama "The Outpost." The role was grueling, but the paycheck allowed Caleb to record a music album a few months later.

That same year, the actor appeared in several other films, including Jim Jarmusch's zombie comedy "The Dead Don't Die." And here's where something happened that would completely transform Jones' creative destiny. Jarmusch didn't just give him a role – he introduced the budding musician to the right people in the recording industry.

Spring 2020 saw the release of the Hollywood actor's debut album titled The Mother Stone. Jones spoke about his music mysteriously: most of the songs, he claimed, were born from dreams where reality blends with fantasy so completely that you can't tell what was actually meant.

The album turned out solid – a full 15 tracks of psychedelic rock. Jones recorded it in Los Angeles and played virtually all the instrumental parts himself. The cover featured him as an 18th-century aristocrat with a powdered face and cigarette in hand – artwork by his artist girlfriend Katya Zvereva. The music videos for the album's songs were equally psychedelic.

If the previous year was devoted to musical experiments, 2021 brought Jones his acting triumph. He landed the lead role in the Australian film "Nitram," a psychological drama about a serial killer based on real events.

Director Justin Kurzel set the actor an incredibly complex task: portray someone who committed a monstrous crime without turning him into a caricature or an object of hatred. Jones delivered brilliantly – his character came across as terrifying yet simultaneously pitiable. At the following Cannes Film Festival, Caleb Landry Jones won the award for Best Actor.

That same year, Jones voiced a robot in the sci-fi film "Finch" starring Tom Hanks. But calling it simply voice work would be wrong – the actor wore a special motion-capture suit and fully "performed" the robot.

Caleb Landry Jones' Personal Life

Since 2019, the actor's personal life has been connected to Katya Zvereva, an artist from St. Petersburg who's a year younger than her famous partner. Katya creates unusual art installations, working with wooden engravings and printing them on various surfaces.

The couple doesn't just live together – they've become creative partners. Katya designed the cover for Caleb's music album, while he supports her artistic projects. In interviews, the actor has said he finally met someone who makes him braver and helps him not fear experimentation.

Caleb's favorite band is Pink Floyd. According to him, their music "became an obsession" for him practically from the moment he first got into music.

Summer 2023 saw the Venice Film Festival premiere of "Dogman," the latest film from Luc Besson. Jones played a man named Doug who survived childhood abuse and found comfort in his friendship with dogs.

The production used over a hundred dogs, turning the shoot into a real circus. Out of this entire canine army, only five animals were professionally trained – the rest had to be coaxed and directed through every trick in the book.

Besson was captivated by the American actor. The French director later admitted that right after wrapping "Dogman," he started thinking about what other role he could cast Jones in. That's when the Dracula idea hit him.

Filming on Besson's new movie began in spring 2024 in snow-covered Finland. "Dracula: A Love Story" was meant to be a romantic take on the classic tale – a love story that spans centuries.

On set, Jones transformed into the Count after four-hour makeup sessions. Special platforms added to his height, making the actor tower over everyone else on the production. Between takes, he stayed in character, speaking with an exaggerated Transylvanian accent.

Besson explained his approach simply: Bram Stoker's original novel has this eternal love storyline that nobody had really explored properly on screen before. The French director decided to fix that oversight.

The film hit French theaters in late July 2025. Critics were split – some saw it as a masterpiece, others dismissed it as a failed copy of Coppola's '90s version. Audiences were more forgiving, especially when it came to praising Jones's performance.
