Paul Thomas Anderson Dreams of Directing a Mission: Impossible Film

The legendary director doesn't shy away from popcorn entertainment and, for instance, absolutely loves Marvel films.

As Le Figaro reports, Paul Thomas Anderson wanted to direct one of the Mission: Impossible films and was counting on Tom Cruise, the star of his movie Magnolia, to bring him into the director's chair. But it never happened. "I was very disappointed. I think he's done with Mission now, so it's not going to happen," the filmmaker noted. It's hard to tell if he was being serious or just making an ironic joke.

It's tough to imagine what Anderson could've pulled off, considering he's about as far from action movies as you can get, focusing instead on complex auteur dramas. That said, it looks like his new film One Battle After Another will pack plenty of action. Martin Scorsese recently praised Anderson's new film. But according to industry analysts, the movie risks bombing at the box office.
