What the film is about
The story takes place in Egypt during the Roman Empire. A carpenter's family (Nicolas Cage) hides from authorities when the boy — known only as the Son — begins manifesting frightening supernatural abilities. Under the influence of a mysterious other child, he rebels against his guardian. This conflict escalates into real tragedy that threatens the entire family.According to Deadline, the film is interpreted as a reimagining of Jesus Christ's childhood: director Lofti Nathan shifts focus to the human side of the story and shows that divine power can be connected not only to light, but also to darkness.
The film's foundation
"The Carpenter's Son" draws inspiration from the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas — a 2nd-century text about Jesus's life from ages five to twelve. Here, according to Wikipedia, he's shown as a gifted child with divine power that manifests in both frightening and miraculous acts: clay birds brought to life, curses that kill boys and blind neighbors, followed by resurrections of dead children and healing of the wounded.
