Gandalf and Frodo Will Appear in "The Hunt for Gollum". Plus 8 More Characters We're Expecting in the New Lord of the Rings Film

Actor Ian McKellen has confirmed Gandalf's return in the new Lord of the Rings franchise installment from director Peter Jackson, along with Frodo played by Elijah Wood. The wizard actor made this revelation at the For the Love of Fantasy event.

However, the plot of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" opens doors for many other iconic characters that fans are seriously hoping to see on screen. From Aragorn and Sam to Legolas and Sauron. Who else might return? Here's the breakdown:

Aragorn

His role in hunting Gollum is key. In the books, he's the one who captures Sméagol and brings him to Mirkwood. The chance to see Viggo Mortensen again is huge, and for many fans, that's the main reason to hit theaters.

Legolas

The graceful elf and franchise heartthrob. In the story, he's the one who tells the Council of Elrond about Gollum's escape from the prison where the elves held him. An Orlando Bloom cameo is almost certain.

Thranduil

The Woodland Realm's king and Legolas's father. His authority is directly connected to the prison where they held Gollum. Lee Pace could return once again as the majestic ruler.

Galadriel

One of Middle-earth's wisest and most powerful figures. Based on "The Hobbit" trilogy (also directed by Jackson), she's a close friend of Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Even a brief Cate Blanchett appearance in flashbacks would make the film feel more epic.

Sam

Frodo's (Elijah Wood) loyal friend. While he doesn't participate in the hunt, flashbacks or memories could easily bring Sean Astin back into the story.

Celeborn

Galadriel's husband, whom we barely got to know in the trilogy (unfortunately, Jackson gave him way too little screen time). "The Hunt for Gollum" could give him a chance to shine.

Sauron

Gollum encounters him before being captured by Aragorn. According to looper, in "The Lord of the Rings" book, Aragorn says about Gollum: "He has suffered much. There is no doubt that he was tormented, and the fear of Sauron lies black on his heart." A brief encounter with the Dark Lord would make the film much darker.

Bilbo

The plot of "The Hunt for Gollum," reports Collider, will unfold shortly after Bilbo's birthday. So bringing back Ian Holm through flashbacks or a CGI version would add closure. Remember, it was Bilbo who stole the One Ring from Gollum in "The Hobbit" book.

Film Facts

Andy Serkis will direct, once again playing Gollum using motion capture technology. The screenplay is being written by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — the same team behind the iconic trilogy. "The Hunt for Gollum" will be the first of two new Middle-earth films.

The project has been in discussion for over a year. Filming is planned for 2026. The premiere is scheduled for December 2027.

The film promises to show Gollum's inner struggle and the dark sides that were only briefly touched on before.

Interestingly, in "The Fellowship of the Ring" book, this very event — Gollum's capture by Aragorn and his interrogation by the elves — becomes an important link leading to the Council of Elrond. So the film will essentially tie two stories together. Earlier, we at zoomboola.com reported that Ian McKellen will return as Magneto in the new "Avengers."
