`Euphoria` star Austin Abrams will play the lead role in the reboot of `Resident Evil`

It seems that Milla Jovovich is time to hang up the shotgun on the wall.

The main character in the new adaptation of the cult video game franchise will now be a man. The candidate for this role is the actor from the series "Euphoria," Austin Abrams (in the project, he played Ethan Daley).

From "Barbarian" to Zombie Apocalypse

According to Hollywood Reporter, the reboot is entrusted to Zach Cregger. The director is known for the horror film "Barbarian" (2022), which was warmly received by audiences. Cregger will not only direct but also write the script himself.

Filming is scheduled to begin soon, with shoots taking place in Europe in the summer of 2025.

Notably, this is not the first collaboration between Zach and Austin. They are also currently working together on the thriller "Weapons," set to release in August 2025.

What Awaits Us: Remake, Sequel, Prequel?

The creators have not yet disclosed the plot of the zombie horror. Whether it will be an adaptation of one of the Resident Evil games, a free fantasy on the theme, or something entirely new—time will tell.

But it's clear the spectacle promises to be at least intense, as Shay Hatten is listed as a co-writer. He worked on the films "John Wick 4," "Army of the Dead," and "Day Shift."

Dubious Adaptation

Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment ("Barbarian," "Minecraft"), PlayStation Productions, and Miri Yoon ("Weapon") have taken on the production of the project.

The mention of "Minecraft" among the producer projects involuntarily raises concerns. The adaptation of the popular game with Jack Black and Jason Momoa gathered a substantial amount of dislikes and angry comments even before its release. Will "Resident Evil" repeat its unfortunate fate?

Films based on games rarely fully satisfy fans. This was the case with the 2002 "Resident Evil," the very first game adaptation. With a modest rating of 6.6 on IMDb, the film was criticized for predictability, lack of drive, and deviation from the game's canon.
The game is captivating, dark, frightening, original, and creates an incredible atmosphere through a combination of sound effects, eerie music, engaging plot and characters, as well as innovative gameplay mechanics. The game is good in every way, and this film fails in every attempt to recreate that experience.

Fans also disliked the Netflix series of the same name, whose viewer rating on IMDb is even lower than that of the film starring Milla Jovovich. It received only 4.2 out of 10.

Kregger and the team face a difficult task: not just to make another "Resident Evil," but to create a film that will satisfy both game fans and genre enthusiasts, and possibly even attract a new audience.

The premiere is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Are you looking forward to the new "Resident Evil" with a male lead?
