Dove Cameron is an American actress and singer best known for her roles in the TV show "Liv and Maddie" (2013-2017) and the fantasy-action movie "Descendants" (2015) along with its sequels.Early Life and Childhood
Dove Cameron, born Chloe Celeste Hosterman on January 15, 1996, in Seattle, Washington, tragically lost her father, Philip Alan Hosterman, in 2011. Her mother, Bonnie Wallace, is a producer and writer. At the time of her father's death, her parents were divorced. Dove has an elder sister, Claire Hosterman (born in 1989), who is a singer and vocal coach. Cameron has Slovak, Russian, Hungarian, and French ancestry. She speaks French fairly well, having frequently visited France, where one of her great-grandmothers on her father's side was born. Her father called her "Dove" since her childhood. After his death, she legally changed her name in memory of him. Cameron's introduction to the arts came early. At 8, she began performing at the Bainbridge Performing Arts community theater. By 11, she landed the role of young Cosette in the popular production of "Les Misérables", and at 12, she played the lead role of Mary in the play "The Secret Garden", based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.In an interview, Dove mentioned being constantly bullied and ridiculed at school from fifth grade onwards. Despite struggles with peers, she remained focused on her dream of succeeding in the entertainment industry. Her dream began to materialize when, at 14, Dove and her family moved to Los Angeles. She then joined the National Championship Show Choir at Burbank Middle School.
Film Career
In 2012, Cameron was cast in a Disney Channel series initially titled "Bits and Pieces". After shooting the pilot, the series was renamed "Liv and Maddie", with Dove taking on dual lead roles as twin sisters Liv and Maddie Rooney. Despite their identical appearance, the twins have distinct personalities. The pilot episode, released in mid-2013, garnered a viewership of 5.8 million, marking the highest rating in the last two and a half years since the premiere of "Shake It Up". The show was incredibly popular not only in the US but also in South America. In Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, the story about twins even became the most popular foreign show of the year. From 2013 to 2014, four seasons were shot, all featuring Dove Cameron. While filming "Liv and Maddie," Cameron managed to appear in the second season of the famous show "Shameless" (2012), the fifth season of the detective series "The Mentalist" (2012), and also starred in the leading role in the adventure film "Cloud 9" (2014) about a young snowboarder. In 2015, Dove starred in her first non-Disney movie – in Kyle Newman's comedy-adventure film "Barely Lethal." She had a supporting role while the main character was played by Hailee Steinfeld. That same year, she was cast in the lead role in the fantasy-action movie "Descendants" about the offspring of famous villains. She played the daughter of Maleficent, while Cruella De Vil's son from "101 Dalmatians" was played by Cameron Boyce and Jafar's offspring from "Aladdin" was played by Booboo Stewart, among others. She played the self-centered, arrogant, and talentless Amber Von Tussle, a contestant in Miss Teenage Hairspray. Along with Dove, singers Ariana Grande and Kristin Chenoweth also participated. Cameron's performance was highly praised by critics and audiences: "Ariana was outstanding, but Dove was the real star of the movie," the press noted. Mid-2017 saw the premiere of "Descendants 2," with Cameron's character at the forefront. In March the following year, Dove appeared in the fifth season of the popular superhero series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." from Marvel about a fictional crime-fighting organization. In the series, Cameron appeared as Ruby, daughter of General Hale (Catherine Dent), an Air Force officer and HYDRA agent, whose main goal is to arrest all loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. In 2018, Dove Cameron appeared in the musical melodrama "Dumplin'" in a secondary role. She also voiced Gwen Stacy, one of Peter Parker's first girlfriends, in the animated series "Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors," and one of the main characters in the animated film "Angry Birds 2."In 2019, the third installment of "Descendants" premiered, once again featuring Dove Cameron. On August 27, 2013, Dove Cameron released a cover of "On Top of the World" by the American pop-rock band Imagine Dragons as a single for the series "Liv and Maddie". The song held the 17th spot on the Billboard Kid Digital Songs chart for three weeks. Two months later, Dove released the single "Better In Stereo" under Walt Disney Records, which became her first number 1 hit. Her next single "Count Me In", released in mid-2014, also reached the top spot on the Billboard chart. Several of Cameron's songs from "Descendants" also made it to various music charts. Riding on the film's success, Dove recorded a cover of Christina Aguilera 's "Genie in the Bottle" and shot a music video in the "Descendants" style, which garnered over 22 million views in less than a month. In 2015, Cameron and her "Liv and Maddie" co-star Ryan McCartan formed a band called "The Girl and the Dreamcatcher" and released several singles, accompanied by music videos. In 2017, the musical project "Carscendants" was launched. It featured "Descendants" movie actors, including Dove, singing songs from the film while driving. That same year, Cameron announced she had started working on her debut album. The mini-album "Bloodshot / Waste", comprising two songs, was released in September 2019. Dove's single "Boyfriend", released in February 2022, was a massive hit. The track went viral on TikTok, accumulating 4.7 million likes. In the song, Dove openly spoke about her sexuality and unambiguously described a relationship with a girl. In 2013, Dove began dating actor and singer Ryan McCartan, her "Liv and Maddie" co-star and future music partner. In April 2016, the couple announced their engagement, but they split up less than six months later. From December 2016, Cameron dated Scottish actor Thomas Doherty, born in 1995, who played Captain Hook's son in "Descendants 2". Their relationship ended in October 2020. "Thomas and I have decided to split. It was an incredibly difficult decision, but we still love each other and will remain friends," Dove shared with her followers. In May 2021, Dove revealed her bisexuality. "I've given many hints but was afraid to tell everyone," she shared. This confession came after a controversy over her "We Belong" music video, in which she was accused of queer-baiting (intentionally including LGBTQ+ themes for mass approval). However, she asked fans not to label her:I choose to love myself and be who I am every day, without adjusting based on the room I'm in. I won't apologize for who I am.
