Travolta is brilliant in the role of the villain, creating a frightening and memorable image. Interestingly, his character did not appear in the "The Punisher" comics (on which the film is based). Howard was specially created for the project.
Travolta is quite good in this movie as a bad guy, mainly because I feel he no longer resembles a nice good guy, unless you're a middle-aged woman constantly recalling scenes from 'Grease', and as Howard Saint, he's always angry.

The film is full of dark humor, colorful characters, and, of course, Travolta's signature charm. A great choice if you're in the mood for something lighter yet still "gangster." Interestingly, John initially didn't want to play in this movie, but Quentin Tarantino convinced him. And it was worth it!
The actors play their characters very well. Again, Travolta is excellent and is the center of attention in the film. Director Barry Sonnenfeld (from 'The Addams Family') did a good job with the direction, avoiding dull moments. Fortunately, we have actors and a director who made it even better and definitely more interesting.

An abundance of action, explosions, and of course, a bald Travolta with a goatee firing a bazooka—is an unforgettable sight.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who plays the rule-following character, was rather dull, and he occupies the first few minutes of the film, but when John Travolta shows up, let's just say, it's damn exciting. Just switch off and enjoy this movie for what it is; not every movie has to be smart to be enjoyable.

A remake of the classic 1974 thriller "The Taking of Pelham 123." Travolta plays Ryder, the leader of a gang that hijacks a subway train in New York City. He demands a ransom, threatening to kill passengers, and engages in a tense psychological duel with the dispatcher (Denzel Washington).

The film keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end, showcasing Travolta as a cold-blooded and calculating villain.
'The Taking' works well as a thriller because the tandem of Tony Scott and Denzel Washington (this is their fourth collaboration) always delivers, and the addition of Travolta, who is always entertaining as a villain, is another nice touch. It relies on strong acting and solid direction, and for these reasons alone, it's worth watching.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, Travolta gives his all in portraying one of the most notorious gangsters in history.
In terms of realism, this was a great turn for Travolta. He could have played Gotti as a cold and 'freezing' person who could turn on his charisma at will, but instead, he played him quite sincerely. This fits well with the descriptions of the mafia boss I have read over the years. In them, he was portrayed as a charming and sociable person who could become brutal and charming again within seconds.
