Horror in the Spirit of "Shutter Island" and "The Shining": Scorsese Set to Direct Film with DiCaprio and Lawrence

Martin Scorsese returns to dark psychology and the mysteries of the human mind. His new project will be an adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel "What Happens at Night," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles.

Filming is set to kick off in January, with Apple Original Films and Studiocanal producing, reports Deadline.

What the film's about

The story follows an American married couple who travel to a snow-covered European city to adopt a child. They end up staying at a massive, nearly empty hotel where every new person they meet seems to be hiding something.

There's an eccentric singer, a twisted businessman, and a charismatic healer. But the longer the couple stays in this strange place, the more reality and their own identities start to blur.

Everything we know about the film

  • — Genre reunion. Back in 2010, and already wowed audiences with "Shutter Island". This new project promises the same atmosphere of psychological games and illusions. If you're into Kubrick's "The Shining", keep an eye on this new horror.
  • — DiCaprio takes the lead. After his triumph in "One Battle After Another" (2025), which was called one of the actor's finest performances, Leonardo faces a new challenge — a role in an intimate story where subtle drama takes center stage.
  • — Award-winning screenplay. The adaptation was written by Patrick Marber, a playwright and Oscar-winning screenwriter for "Closer".
  • — The right home. Apple already worked successfully with Scorsese and DiCaprio on "Killers of the Flower Moon", which means this project will have both scale and creative freedom.
With this powerhouse team leading the way, everything points to this film already being one of 2026's most anticipated premieres. Earlier, we at zoomboola.com reported on the development of "Heat 2" from Michael Mann.
