Denis Villeneuve is shooting "Dune 3" on film

The first two films adapting Frank Herbert's famous book were shot with standard digital cameras. What made the director change his approach?

According to World of Reel, Villeneuve is planning to shoot the third installment of the saga using 15-perf 65mm (IMAX) and 5-perf 65mm format cameras.

Journalists speculate this decision stems from the film's new cinematographer – Linus Sandgren. The Oscar winner for "La La Land" is a staunch advocate for film photography, believing digital can't capture the true "magic and emotions." The zoomboola.com editorial team wants to note that such a decision isn't exactly rare among major directors. Film cameras have previously been embraced by cinema heavyweights like Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. Their example has proven that film's time is far from over. On the contrary – this method can bring tremendous depth to a picture.

Filming on the third "Dune" has already begun. The film is slated for release in 2026.
