"Scrubs" Sequel Filming Officially Begins. Which Actors Are Returning and What Will the Story Be About?

We're getting a proper sequel in the spirit of the original, with a fresh take on medicine and the return of familiar characters.

According to Deadline, the ABC project brings back Zach Braff (JD), Donald Faison (Turk), and Sarah Chalke (Elliot). All three won't just reprise their beloved characters but will also serve as executive producers.

Judy Reyes (Carla) is currently tied up with another ABC project, but "Scrubs" producers are actively negotiating to get the actress on board for at least a few episodes.

Leading the continuation is Bill Lawrence, creator of the original show.

What the sequel will be about

The storyline focuses on how the main characters — and medicine itself — have evolved over the years. JD and Turk are now seasoned doctors mentoring a new generation.

According to Lawrence, "Scrubs 2.0" is "a hybrid sequel and reboot where familiar faces meet new surgical interns."

He added in an interview: Scrubs means so much to me. And I'm incredibly excited about the opportunity to get our gang back together.

What to expect from the sequel

No exact premiere date has been announced yet, but the series is set to debut mid-season 2025–2026.

If the new Scrubs maintains the original's signature humor and strikes the right balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling, ABC has a real shot at recapturing lightning in a bottle. Fans are waiting — now it's all about not letting them down. Earlier, we at zoomboola.com covered the development of The Big Bang Theory spin-off.
