`A Minecraft Movie` set a box office record in the USA for video game adaptations

The case when critics are dissatisfied, but audiences are buying up all the tickets.

Imagine: you're an investor who put 150 million into a film about square people. On its opening weekend, it brings you twice as much! Such a miracle happened with the film "A Minecraft Movie," which has just set a new gold standard for video game adaptations.

According to the popular publication Variety, instead of the expected 70-90 million dollars, it grossed 157 million. And that's just for the first weekend in the U.S. Worldwide, this figure exceeded 300 million. Considering that the film itself (excluding advertising) cost 150 million.

"A Minecraft Movie" not only paid off immediately after its release but also became the most successful film of 2025 at the start.

Moreover, the film set a new record for video game adaptations, surpassing "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" in opening weekend gross (which had 146 million at the start).

Interestingly, critics didn't particularly appreciate the film, giving it average ratings (47% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, regular viewers liked it much more, with 87% positive reviews:
It did exactly what it promised: a funny kids' movie with jokes for both gamers and non-gamers. Jokes for everyone and a few for adults. It can be watched regardless of whether you know the game or not. A fun family movie.

The enormous success of the film is easy to explain: "Minecraft" has long won the hearts of players worldwide (over 140 million people play it monthly). The adaptation allowed fans to see how the blocky world might look in reality, and the star cast with Jack Black and Jason Momoa only amplified the interest.

However, not all recent films are as lucky as "A Minecraft Movie." Earlier, we at zoomboola.com reported that fans of the "Shrek" franchise massively criticized the trailer for the new installment.
