Childhood

Bella Ramsey was born in the English city of Nottingham in 2003. Her father works in business. Bella finished school through online education since she was busy working on film sets.

Bella's passion for acting started when she was just four years old. She enrolled in the children's acting school Stagecoach Theatre Arts and began participating in plays. She landed roles in "The Music Man" and "Annie," playing Amaryllis and Molly respectively.
Though these were children's productions, by age eight, Bella and her older sister were performing with a local comedy troupe.

Game of Thrones

In 2013, Bella enrolled in the Central Junior Television Workshop in Nottingham. There she started auditioning for serious film roles. She came close to landing a major role in 2014, nearly securing a part in Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" before it ultimately went to Ruby Barnhill.

But Bella's actual on-screen debut proved just as epic. She appeared in the sixth season of the fantasy series "Game of Thrones," based on the works of George R. R. Martin.

Bella Ramsey brought Lyanna Mormont, the young head of House Mormont, to life in "Game of Thrones" and immediately captivated audiences. She embodied the character exactly as written in the books: a natural-born leader who could command respect. Her adult co-stars were blown away by her performance, with The Hollywood Reporter calling her the "rising star of the sixth season." The young actress also appeared in the seventh and eighth seasons of the epic saga.

Surprisingly, Bella hadn't actually watched "Game of Thrones" before landing the role of Lyanna Mormont. Since the series premiered in 2011 with notoriously violent content, her parents didn't want her watching it. But once she got the part, she watched several episodes and studied every detail to nail her performance.
Bella loved the filming experience because her seasoned co-stars treated her with respect and offered valuable guidance. She'd get scripts ahead of time to study them thoroughly, plus work with a dialect coach to perfect the accent. The dubbing process proved especially challenging, requiring her to sync her dialogue perfectly with her character's lip movements.

Bella has fond memories of working alongside Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke on set. Even though she was the only kid on set, they treated her as an equal.

Further career

After her appearance in the HBO series, young Bella received offers from directors. In 2017, she appeared in the short film "Eleftheria", and a year later, two full-length films with her participation were released - the drama "Two for Joy " and the comedy "Holmes & Watson". While the first film was well received, the latter was heavily criticized and even received several "Golden Raspberry" awards. However, this did not harm the career of the rising star.

In addition, Ramsey landed the lead role in the TV series "The Worst Witch," where she played the bumbling witch Mildred Hubble, who constantly finds herself in trouble and funny situations. For her portrayal of the hapless witch, Ramsey received the prestigious BAFTA award in 2019 in the UK.

However, actress Lydia Page would replace her in the fourth and fifth seasons of the show. The writers incorporated this change by having a spell permanently alter Mildred's appearance. In 2018, Bella began voicing the titular character in the animated series "Hilda" on Netflix.

In 2020, Bella played one of the key roles in the drama "Resistance", based on the biography of the famous mime Marcel Marceau. Alongside Ramsey, the film starred Jesse Eisenberg, Clemence Poesy, and Matthias Schweighofer. The film received mixed reviews, but it marked a significant step forward in Bella's film career.

In the same year, Ramsey appeared in another major fantasy series - "His Dark Materials," and also voiced another animated character, this time in the animated series "Summer Camp Island."

In 2021, another movie featuring Bella was released - the film "Catherine Called Birdy ", based on the children's novel of the same name by author Karen Cushman. The events of the book take place in medieval England. The main character Catherine is a 14-year-old daughter of a knight who is being forced into marriage, but she resists it.

Personal life of Bella Ramsey

In early 2023, Bella Ramsey clarified her gender identity, saying "I think my gender has always been very fluid." She officially identifies as non-binary, but "when it comes to pronouns - I really don't care."
This is what bothers me more than pronouns: Being called a «young woman» or a «powerful young woman,» «young lady,» but I'm just not that. In Catherine Called Birdy, I was in dresses. Young Elizabeth, I was in a corset. And I felt super powerful in that. Playing these more feminine characters is a chance to be something so opposite to myself, and it's really fun.»

Joel, the other lead character, is played by fellow "Game of Thrones" alum Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell). The series was created by Neil Druckmann, who wrote the original game, alongside Craig Mazin, who created HBO's acclaimed "Chernobyl."

The series premiered in early 2023. Bella revealed that they wore chest binding for 90% of filming to help them focus on their performance. Their co-star Pedro Pascal, whose sister is transgender, was "very kind" to them. The two talked extensively about gender and sexuality. "The conversations weren't always deep—they could be funny and humorous, across the spectrum. We were just very honest and open with each other."
