Finnish Actor Lands Lead Role in 'The Passion of the Christ' Sequel

Filming of the sequel has already begun at Rome's Cinecittà Studios, where Mel Gibson shot the first film.

As Variety reports, after a long casting journey, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen, known for the series "Vikings: Valhalla," landed the role of Jesus Christ, while Mariela Garriga will play Mary Magdalene. But the entire cast had to be reshuffled. Kasia Smutniak will appear as the Virgin Mary, Riccardo Scamarcio will play Pontius Pilate. Rupert Everett is also joining the film.

The zoomboola.com editorial team reminds readers: it was revealed earlier that Jim Caviezel, who played Christ in original 2004 film, wasn't brought back for the sequel due to his age. De-aging the actor would've been too expensive. "The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection" is expected to chronicle the events of the three days following Christ's crucifixion. The film is set to be released in two parts in 2027.
