“Before Night Falls” (2000)

This film is a subtle and poignant biographical drama. plays the Cuban poet and writer Reinaldo Arenas, who is persecuted for his non-traditional orientation and anti-communist views.

For this role, Bardem was nominated for an Academy Award. The film also stars Johnny Depp and Sean Penn; they agreed to appear in the film for free because they loved director Julian Schnabel's work.
Javier Bardem's incredible performance in the lead role binds the film together and makes you genuinely care about what's happening. The supporting cast is excellent: Sean Penn has an incredible scene at the beginning of the film where he convinces us he is Cuban. We didn't recognize him at all. Johnny Depp plays two small but very memorable roles. Beautifully shot and directed in a delightful manner.

"Mar adentro" (2004)

"Mar adentro" is a profound and touching story of Ramón Sampedro, a paralyzed man fighting for the right to euthanasia.

Bardem, almost immobile on screen, creates an incredibly powerful and emotional portrayal. The film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Javier immersed himself so deeply in his role that he tried not to move even between takes.
If you go to the cinema to appreciate the depth of the human soul, the feelings of real people, and to study the characters, make sure to place this film at the top of your list. This experience is immensely rewarding, prompting the viewer to reflect on the very meaning of life. And Javier Bardem did not disappoint, meeting the challenge head-on and delivering a captivating, convincing, and mesmerizing performance.

"Los lunes al sol" (2002)

A social drama about a group of unemployed friends in the port city of Vigo. Bardem plays Santa, the charismatic leader of this group, trying to maintain dignity and hope amid an economic crisis. As a form of protest, he engages in acts of civil disobedience.

The film is based on real events that occurred in the city of Gijón, Spain, where the local shipyard has long been on the brink of closure due to the crisis.
How do you imagine the life of an unemployed person without family, possessions, or future? Boredom is certainly one of the answers, but this film does its best to unravel this basic storyline! It's quite an achievement to tell a story about something so dull without becoming dull and tedious itself. At times it's even funny, and every minute is well-crafted. A truly smart script with great actors.

“Éxtasis” (1996)

Three friends (one of whom is played by Bardem) are tired of their parents' mundane lives. They dream of breaking free and starting fresh somewhere else. Before doing so, they decide to rob their families, but the daring plan goes awry.

Although the film didn't gain wide recognition, it showcases Javier's early talent as he was gaining experience in cinema but was already able to create tension on screen.
This thriller has intrigue, intense drama, and a bit of action. The cast, frankly speaking, is excellent: Javier Bardem, Daniel Guzmán, Leire Berrocal. The film keeps you on edge. It's an engaging film with enjoyable moments that will appeal to Bardem fans.

"Huevos de oro" (1993)

Another early work of Bardem. This is a satirical tragicomedy where Javier plays Benito Gonzalez, an ambitious builder obsessed with the idea of constructing the tallest skyscraper in Melilla.

The film mocks the cult of success and machismo. It's a solid drama about an ordinary guy from the bottom who dreams of becoming successful.
'Huevos de oro' is not a particularly deep film, but its dramatic line, very close to classic notions of tragedy, is impressive, and I would say this film is worth watching. Several years passed between my first and second viewing of this film, but during that time I often recalled the plot and the final scenes.
