Tim Burton Returns to Animation. He'll Create His First Animated Film Since 2012

What is the cult director working on now? Which film was Burton's last animated work? I'll tell you all about it.

His characters have always lived on the edge of the living and the drawn, light and darkness, children's fairy tales and gothic nightmares. And here's great news for everyone who grew up on "Corpse Bride" and "Frankenweenie": Burton's working on animation again. For the first time since 2012.

I'm working on one animated project. I hope to get the script soon and then I'll continue. This is what really inspires me, he admitted in a fresh interview for "MILENIO".

Details are still scarce. The script's still in development. But the fact that he's returning says a lot: the director, clearly tired of massive studio projects, is gravitating back toward heartfelt animation that's hopefully just as stylish as before.

What came before?

last animated film was "Frankenweenie" (2012) — a black-and-white animated feature where a boy named Victor brings his dead dog Sparky back to life. The result? Chaos, naturally. But what touching and stylish chaos.

This film was simultaneously children's horror and tender parable. No wonder it won the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film and earned nominations for four major awards, including the Oscar and BAFTA.

Before "Frankenweenie", Burton also released "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) — a gothic Christmas tale that became a classic, and "Corpse Bride" (2005) — a sad, beautiful musical about love beyond life.

If the director's returning to this format after all these years, he's got something to say. For now, we can only wonder whether this'll be a continuation of something old or a completely new story. Earlier, we at zoomboola.com reported that DC is preparing a legendary superhero trio team-up.
