Childhood and Family

Kim Ji-soo, better known simply as Jisoo, was born on January 3, 1995, in the music-loving city of Gunpo. She grew up with her older brother Jung-hoon and sister Ji-yoon.

Her parents, Ha-Joon and Ji-Yoo Kim, were financially comfortable. Fans speculated about her parents' careers, but nothing was ever confirmed. Some fans believed her father held a high-level position at music channel Mnet. Jisoo rarely shared photos of her mother, who stayed away from public events.

Her family's financial stability gave her opportunities for well-rounded development. Jisoo was interested in everything: drawing, basketball, taekwondo, drama, and languages (she speaks Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese). She also had a talent for writing and briefly dreamed of a literary career.

Jisoo studied at the Seoul School of Performing Arts. The curriculum focused on singing, dancing, and acting. After graduation, Jisoo enrolled at Korea National University of Arts to continue her arts studies and pursue music education.

In 2011, the promising young talent joined YG Entertainment. She started as an intern, appearing in commercials and music videos for established artists. During this time, she landed a small role in the series "The Producers." But major success was still years away, and she had to wait for her moment.

Early Steps

Jisoo's breakthrough came in 2016 when she became a member of Blackpink. The four-member girl group rocketed to stardom virtually overnight.

The group released their debut album Square One, featuring just two tracks - Boombayah and Whistle. The mini-album was an instant hit, exploding not only in Korea but throughout India, Turkey, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The group captivated audiences from their very first performance. In addition to fame, the group received several awards and rave reviews from critics.

As for Jisoo, she became the host of the South Korean TV show Inkigayo, dedicated to music and talented performers.

With music as their primary focus, the group wasted no time releasing new material, and that same year they released a mini-album called Square Two. It also contained only two songs - Playing with Fire and Stay. "Playing with Fire" climbed international charts and gained major traction in Canada.

Jisoo landed a cameo role in the 2017 series "Part-Time Idols."

That same year, Jisoo and her group presented a new song called As If It's Your Last. The music video hit 10 million views in under 24 hours – a huge milestone. The song topped the iTunes charts, and the group performed shows in several cities in Japan. The group released a Japanese-language mini-album for their fans there. The massive success of "As If It's Your Last" even landed it a spot in "Justice League."

Career Rising

The group's skyrocketing popularity sparked the release of the reality show Blackpink House in January 2018. The show gave fans an inside look at the daily lives of all four members: Lisa, Rosé, Jennie, and Jisoo. Concurrently, Jisoo decided not to renew her contract as the host of Inkigayo.

Blackpink House was pure gold for fans, giving them an intimate look at their idols like never before. The show also featured new songs that were later compiled into a mini-album titled Square Up. The tracks Forever Young and Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, with the latter becoming the title track, were instant fan favorites. The album was a massive hit, launching the group on a tour to Japan.

Soon after, Blackpink scored the opportunity to collaborate with Dua Lipa. Together, they created the song Kiss and Make Up. Jisoo sang in Korean, while the rest of the members sang entirely in English.

In 2019, Jisoo and her group began a world tour. Simultaneously, they dropped another Korean mini-album titled Kill This Love, featuring four songs. It was a massive success, and the title track was even released in Japanese, much to fans' delight.

A year later, the group dropped the hit Sour Candy after Lady Gaga's producers invited them to record with the pop icon. The song was included in Lady Gaga's album Chromatica. "There's so much to learn from Lady Gaga. She's fearless about trying new things and genuinely loves every performance," Jisoo gushed about the collaboration.

The song shot up charts worldwide, becoming Blackpink's biggest hit to date. It was only surpassed by the hit How You Like That. The music video was even more explosive, racking up a billion views in record time.

A year later, Jisoo scored an incredible opportunity: she landed the lead role in the drama Snowdrop. Director Cho Hyun Tak initially hadn't planned to cast a rookie actress in such a demanding role, but Jisoo absolutely blew him away during auditions - he knew she was perfect for it!

Snowdrop tells the story of mass protests that erupted in Korea in 1987. A university graduate student hides from law enforcement in a women's dorm, with help from a female student played by Jisoo. Despite the dangerous circumstances, romance blooms between the characters, keeping audiences glued to their screens throughout the story.

Jisoo's Personal Life

Korean performers rarely open up about their personal relationships, and Jisoo follows this tradition. Many K-pop agencies discourage their artists from dating, worried it might hurt their careers and fan appeal.

However, in summer 2023, news broke that Jisoo was dating actor Ahn Bo-Hyun. Both agencies confirmed the relationship: YG Entertainment (Jisoo's label) and FN Entertainment (Ahn Bo-Hyun's agency). Fans worldwide were thrilled and closely followed their relationship, but by October, the couple had announced their breakup.

The breakup came down to both artists' packed schedules. Jisoo has numerous projects, including music and films, and Bo-Hyun's schedule was equally demanding. Though they tried to work around each other's schedules at first, it quickly became impossible. Jisoo and Ahn Bo-Hyun decided to stay friends but go their separate ways.

Jisoo Now

Currently, Jisoo's music and acting career is absolutely thriving. In 2023, she was seen in the thriller "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman." The film follows a professor who performs fake exorcisms until he encounters real supernatural forces.

Jisoo played a small role as a celestial maiden and completely nailed it. Even Park Chan-wook, director of the cult classic "Oldboy," praised her performance:
... I was shocked. Since it was a minor role, I thought they'd cast a supporting actress. But while watching, I thought, 'Can a supporting actress be this beautiful?'
In early 2023, Jisoo announced she'd launched a YouTube channel with plans to share travel vlogs. The channel hit over a million subscribers in just hours – and that was just the beginning. Since then, she's shared videos from her adventures in Barcelona and New York, plus behind-the-scenes concert footage and moments with her bandmates. In one video, Jisoo announced her solo album "Me," which dropped in March 2023 and racked up over 1.3 million pre-orders.
