Growing up in the picturesque county among hills and small villages was worlds away from the glamorous film industry. From ages nine to eighteen, Charlotte attended Teesside High School, where she began showing interest in theater and literature.
Her path to her future profession unfolded gradually. As a child, she'd put on puppet shows behind the sofa for her parents, then came school productions, all fueled by a love of English literature.

"Wuthering Heights" and Meeting Tom Hardy
In 2009, ITV launched a television adaptation of Emily Brontë's novel "Wuthering Heights". Charlotte landed the lead role of Catherine Earnshaw, the passionate and headstrong heroine whose love for Heathcliff became one of the most tragic love stories in world literature. The role of Heathcliff went to the then not-quite-as-famous-as-now but already emerging actor Tom Hardy. When Charlotte first met Tom on set, she wasn't thrilled. She was worried that he'd just played Charles Bronson, Britain's most dangerous criminal. She invited him for a cup of tea, and after several cups and some heart-to-heart conversation, she realized he "was mainly doing it to make people laugh." Their time working together evolved into a strong friendship, and then into a romantic relationship.

"Peaky Blinders"
One of Charlotte's most memorable roles was May Carleton in the cult BBC series "Peaky Blinders". Her character, a widow from an aristocratic family who trains racehorses, appeared in the second and fourth seasons.Charlotte explained what drew her to the character:
Charlotte added that during their scenes together, there's always a sense that time stands still: "It's those timeless moments that draw them to each other."Charlotte RileySteven Knight wrote her in a very intriguing way. What's interesting is that both Tommy [Cillian Murphy's character] and May are lonely in their own ways. She's under pressure running the estate single-handedly, and he has to run an entire family alone. I think that's what connects them. Both are constantly being demanded of, but they don't demand anything from each other. It creates an interesting dynamic.
