He has fractures, she has cancer: How Jeremy Renner found love after the accident

Two years ago, the star of "The Avengers" nearly died after being run over by his own snowplow. He broke almost 40 bones, and in the hospital, he wrote a farewell letter to his family. But the superhero played on screen, Renner turned out to be "invincible" in real life as well. The horrific accident not only didn't break him but also helped him find his beloved girlfriend.

Love Amidst Pain

In February 2025, the popular celebrity publication Page Six reported that after an accident, 54-year-old Jeremy Renner met influencer Cassandra Mason. She is 28 years younger than him.

They first started talking during the actor's rehabilitation. It turned out that both had faced serious health issues. In her youth, Mason was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but managed to beat it. In 2019, she wrote on Instagram:
4 years cancer-free!!! Few know that 4 years ago I was diagnosed with 2 types of thyroid cancer.

In 2024, the couple began a relationship. It lasted about eight months, with some breaks. Jeremy and Cassandra didn't publicize their romance, but she was often seen alongside the Hollywood star in Los Angeles and London, including during the filming of "Knives Out 3" (2025).

Despite breaking up in 2024, they maintained a friendly relationship. The reasons for the breakup are not disclosed, but it is known that the split was amicable. The publication notes that they are good friends now.

Terrifying Accident

The accident, in which the "Hawkeye" actor nearly died, occurred on January 1, 2023, in Nevada. That day, Renner tried to tow his nephew's stranded vehicle using a snowplow.

During the maneuver, the heavy equipment weighing over 6.5 tons started moving towards the actor's relative. Wanting to stop the machine, Jeremy tried to climb into the driver's seat but got pulled under the track. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balam shared details of the incident:
After Mr. Renner successfully towed his vehicle from its stuck position, he exited the PistenBully to speak with a family member. At this point, it was noted that the PistenBully [snowplow] began rolling. Attempting to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner tried to return to the driver's seat. According to our investigation, it was at this moment that the PistenBully ran over Mr. Renner.

As a result, Renner suffered 38 fractures, including ribs, jaw, and leg bones, along with severe internal injuries. Neighbors and the actor's nephew quickly called for help, and he was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the reputable news outlet People, doctors performed several surgeries on the Marvel movie star, including chest stabilization and repair of damaged bones.

Despite the severe condition, Renner was able to speak two days after the accident. Within weeks, he began sharing his recovery process on social media, thanking the medical team and fans for their support.

By 2024, Jeremy had recovered well and returned to work. He also wrote a book about the incident, which is set to be released on April 29, 2025.

Jeremy Renner's Personal Life

Before his relationship with Cassandra Mason, the actor was married to model Sonni Pacheco. During their relationship, the couple had a daughter, Ava Berlin.

After the divorce, the actor was seen with actress Eiza González. They were spotted at the Super Bowl in 2020, as reported by Dailymail. He was also rumored to be involved with hairstylist Amber Monson, whom he reportedly met in a club, according to the same publication.

Opinion

Interestingly, in films, Renner often plays tough guys with incredible physical skills, like in Marvel's "Hawkeye" series. There, he is, of course, invincible, agile, strong. Arrows, explosions, falls—nothing fazes him. He gets scratched, brushes it off, and moves on.

Then in real life, this snowplow incident happens. It turns out Renner is a hero not just on screen. He risked himself trying to help his nephew. He got countless fractures, nearly died. But he pulled through.

In movies, Hawkeye would likely be back in action after such an incident in a couple of scenes. Here, Renner had to recover for a long time. This wasn't special effects, but real pain, real effort, real medical work.

In other words, heroism both on screen and in life. In both cases, overcoming challenges.
