"This is insane!": Viewers are blown away by "Last Samurai Standing" series trailer and calling it the new "Squid Game"

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Japanese series "Last Samurai Standing," and viewers are already calling it a mashup of "Squid Game," "Shogun," and the cult classic "Battle Royale."

In the trailer, 300 warriors prepare for a deadly battle over a 100 billion yen prize. The atmosphere is brutal, bloody, and incredibly spectacular.

What the trailer shows

We see Junichi Okada's character arriving at the tournament, greeted by dozens of opponents. "Let the game begin!" shouts one of the deadly game's organizers, before the camera pulls back to reveal masses of warriors crashing into each other with katanas.

Series details

The show is based on manga and a novel by Sego Imamura, adapted as a six-episode series.

The story unfolds in the late 19th century, when 292 samurai gather in Kyoto. Their goal: seize their opponents' wooden tags and reach Tokyo. The winner gets a fortune, the losers get death.

Okada didn't just star in the lead role — he also choreographed the fight scenes. Directors Michihito Fujii and Kento Yamaguchi helmed the project, with nearly 300 actors involved in filming.

The creators promise brutal action, philosophical dialogue, and drama that transcends genre. Netflix Japan's head of content Kaata Sakamoto told Variety: "The Last Samurai Standing is a story about what would happen if these warriors — the strongest and best in Japan — suddenly became ordinary people and were forced to fight for their lives."

All six episodes premiere November 13 on Netflix. Based on the trailer reaction, this could become one of the streaming service's biggest international hits and possibly the new Squid Game — just with katanas. Earlier on zoomboola.com, we broke down the trailer for "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
