Childhood and Family

The real name of the singer LP is Laura Pergolizzi. She was born on March 18, 1981, in Long Island, to a family of Italian-American descent. Her maternal grandparents emigrated to New York State from Naples and Palermo.

Her loving father and mother supported Laura and were always by her side. Although her parents were not in creative professions, her mother loved singing and was glad that her daughter inherited her love for music.
In interviews, the singer speaks warmly of her parents and thanks them for the most important lesson in life. "Don’t conform to others, be yourself," her mother, an ethnic Italian, often told her. "Take things with humor and know how to stand your ground," advised her father, who had both Italian and Irish blood.
The girl taught herself to play the harmonica and ukulele, and her voice, inherited from her mother, amazed with its strength and expressiveness from an early age.

When Laura graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1996, her career path was clear. She struggled with her mother's early death, but her father supported her, and Laura decided to pursue a music career, starting in small clubs in New York. By this time, she had come up with the stage name LP, which simply stands for the initials of her first and last name.

Musical Career

In New York, the girl began performing in a duo called Lionfish with her friend Alicia. They named the group by combining their zodiac signs — Leo (Alicia) and Pisces (Laura). Their music was hard to categorize: they performed both melodic ballads and industrial avant-garde. Lionfish held concerts in clubs and toured across America. LP's vocals were memorable and thrilled the audience.

The girl's unique appearance didn't go unnoticed: unruly curls, thanks to her Italian roots, pale skin, bright eyes on a slender face. She didn't use makeup and preferred suits that elegantly highlighted her androgynous look.

Besides working with Lionfish, the singer collaborated with the band The Plan and briefly performed with Cracker. LP's voice was also heard backing up Cracker's frontman David Lowery. He helped the girls from Lionfish record a demo. Their full album, "Too Much Love," also recorded at David Lowery's studio in 1997, included 11 songs written by LP. The disc sold out within days of its release.

In 2001, the singer released her debut solo album. David Lowery produced "Heart-Shaped Scar." The album was a huge success, and LP was hailed as the discovery of the year, predicted to achieve resounding success. The album was described by critics as "roaring, bold, defiant."

Three years later, LP released her second album, recorded with Linda Perry from "4 Non Blondes." The vibrant pop-rock "Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol" brought LP popularity and caught the attention of music industry heavyweights.

One of the Jam Records executives invited the young singer to record her next album at their studio. LP gladly agreed, understanding the need for producer support. However, the collaboration with the renowned studio didn't pan out. The producers disliked her appearance and insisted on a change of image. But LP, who felt comfortable in men's suits and black sunglasses, didn't comply. Staying true to herself, she terminated the contract with the label in less than a year.

Without producers, she continued writing songs and performing. Her popularity grew, and she even wrote songs on demand for established pop stars, excelling as a songwriter. From 2006 to 2014, LP wrote songs for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Leona Lewis, and Rihanna.

However, she refused to sell her most personal songs. Her next album included precisely those. "Forever for Now," recorded in 2014 at Warner Bros. Records, marked a real breakthrough in her career. The songs from this album introduced her name to the world.

In 2016, the singer released her fourth album. As expected, "Lost on You," named after the main track, topped sales charts in both America and Europe.

After the triumph of her fourth album, she toured extensively while working on songs for a new album. She collaborated with renowned producers Isabella Summers and Rob Cavallo (producer of "Green Day"). In the summer of 2018, LP released two songs from the upcoming album: "Girls Go Wild" and "Recovery." In December of the same year, her fifth album "Heart to Mouth" was released.

In 2020, the songs "How Low Can You Go" and "The One That You Love" came out, and in 2021, "One Last Time," "Goodbye," and "Angels" were released. All of these were included in the new album "Churches," released at the end of 2021.

In October 2022, LP participated in the song "Line It Up" by the American band Palaye Royale for the album "Fever Dream."

LP's Personal Life

The singer has never hidden her orientation—she prefers women. Her mother never found out about it, and her father initially thought it was a form of teenage rebellion. However, once he realized it was her true nature, he supported his daughter as he always did.

The singer experienced her first serious feelings when she met actress Tamzin Brown. They dated for a long time but broke up when Laura suspected her friend of insincerity. The breakup was painful for both. The song "Lost on You" is dedicated to Tamzin.

After a short break, singer Lauren Ruth Ward entered the star's life, whom you might have seen in the final scenes of the "Lost on You" music video. They started dating in 2016. They shared a love of music (Lauren played in several folk-rock bands) and mutual respect.

Their relationship lasted six years. In 2021, fans were saddened to learn of the couple's breakup. Lauren dedicated "The Break Up Song" to her former lover.

After the breakup, LP began dating Mexican actress Julieta Grajales. The relationship lasted about a year. In August 2023, Laura started a relationship with her new love, Czech model Iveta Maurerová. She is 16 years younger than LP and won the Miss Czech Republic beauty pageant in 2018.

Despite Iveta living in Prague and Laura in Los Angeles, they managed to maintain a long-distance relationship. For her girlfriend and communication with her family, which greatly impressed Laura, the singer learned Czech.

LP Now

LP's seventh album, "Love Lines," was released in September 2023. Laura explained the meaning of the title as follows:
[While working on the album] for the first time in my conscious life, I was alone. I was coming out of a relationship, but I was still in love. The album is called 'Love Lines' because I'm capable of several different storylines developing simultaneously, if you know what I mean. Some call it polyamory, but I don't know!
In February 2024, Laura recorded a video in which she appeared wearing a hoodie in the colors of the Russian flag—a gift from her Russian fan community. As a result, the concert in Lithuania, which was supposed to take place a week later, was canceled.
