Writer George Martin showed a photo of a direwolf that was cloned by scientists

The case when fairy tales unexpectedly become reality.

Remember the huge wolves from "Game of Thrones" that protected the Stark children? It turns out that these creatures are not just a figment of George Martin's imagination, the author of the books on which the series was based. Animals strikingly similar to direwolves actually lived on Earth but disappeared 12,000 years ago. Recently, it was announced that scientists have cloned these legendary predators.

George Martin himself has already met them and shared photos on his blog. How is this possible, and what will happen next with the resurrected wolves from ancient times?

This amazing achievement is led by Colossal Biosciences, headed by Ben Lamm. Scientists used DNA from an ancient tooth aged 13,000 years and a skull that is 72,000 years old. As a result, three litters of direwolves were born: two adolescent pups (Romulus and Remus) and a she-wolf named Khaleesi after the "Game of Thrones" heroine.
Our team took ancient DNA and grew healthy cave wolf pups. It seems like magic, but it's science.

The company didn't stop at direwolves. They also successfully cloned red wolves, a species on the brink of extinction, using a new cloning method with blood that does not harm the animals.

The wolves now live in a special reserve where they receive the necessary care and protection. In the future, Colossal plans to create an entire population of direwolves in large natural reserves.

I can write about magic in my books, but Ben and Colossal have created real magic by bringing these majestic beasts back to our world, said George Martin, who now not only writes about direwolves but has seen them with his own eyes.
