How to Make Calcifer's Breakfast from "Howl's Moving Castle" — Scrambled Eggs You'll Definitely Want to Recreate

The simplest anime recipe, time-tested...

I recently dug up a wonderful treasure from my collection — the "Ghibli Cookbook". If you're like me and love not just watching anime but eating while you watch (preferably something delicious), then you'll understand why my heart started racing.

This isn't just another recipe collection — it's a genuine portal into Hayao Miyazaki's kitchen. And honestly, I was already imagining the spirits from "Spirited Away" sneaking off with my toast.

The book's author is Thibaud Villanova — a chef and gastrogeek (I didn't even know that was a thing!) who spent over 10 years creating recipes inspired by Studio Ghibli anime. Each dish draws from a specific scene, and many recipes recreate the food exactly as it appears on screen.

Today we're making Calcifer's breakfast from "Howl's Moving Castle". Remember that scene where Howl struts around in his shirt while Calcifer (the adorable fire demon) grumpily puffs under the skillet? There was something especially cozy about it, and this dish turned out to be perfect to start with.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 slices of thick-cut bacon
  • 3-4 fresh large eggs
  • Pepper — to taste
  • Fresh bread
  • Cheese (cheddar or similar)
  • Parsley or green onions
  • Black tea

How to Cook

Start with a cold cast iron skillet. Don't rush. Just like in life — heating slowly, the bacon becomes crispy while staying juicy inside. This matters.

Cook the bacon two to three slices at a time. Two minutes per side.

Push the slices aside and crack the eggs into the rendered fat — carefully, keeping the yolks intact. Cook for 2 minutes, don't oversalt.

Plate it up, add a slice of cheese, some fresh herbs — and there you have it, an anime aristocrat's breakfast.

Don't forget — a cup of hot tea. Without it, breakfast would just be eggs and bacon, not morning magic.

Warning: Magic Inside

This is one of those recipes where simplicity is deceiving. It contains warmth, that smoky aroma from under the lid, and that "homey comfort" you feel in every Ghibli film. Plus it's the perfect way to feel like a "Howl's Moving Castle" character — even if just for 10 minutes in the morning.

You can add herbs, switch up the cheese, improvise — but the original spirit stays the same: real magic in simple things. Earlier on zoomboola.com, we shared how to fall in love with anime in 6 steps: a beginner's guide.
