Second chance at the galaxy
This isn't Matt Smith's first shot at joining the Star Wars franchise. In 2018, he was considered for a role in the ninth episode of the saga – "The Rise of Skywalker" – but it didn't work out.In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, journalist Josh Horowitz asked the actor if it was true he'd been offered the role of young Palpatine. Smith declined to comment on details but shared his thoughts:
Ultimately, Ian McDiarmid reprised his role as Emperor Palpatine in the trilogy's final film.It was a pretty cool thing, a really cool role and concept. It was a big story, an important Star Wars plot point that could have changed a lot, but it never came together in the end.
