Houses in Astrology

In astrology, the concept of houses is one of the key components in interpreting a natal chart or horoscope. Houses divide the celestial sphere into 12 parts.

Each house in astrology is traditionally associated with specific aspects of a person's life and personality. The placement of planets in these houses and the zodiac signs they govern determines how planetary energies will affect a person's life.

Houses in astrology provide a fundamental structure for understanding a person's potential and the life challenges they may encounter. They help astrologers interpret the interaction of planetary energies with a person's personality and identify which life areas will be most influenced by these energies.

Location and Significance of Houses

Astrological houses start from the eastern horizon, a point known as the Ascendant (denoted as ASC) or the rising sign. This is the point where the ecliptic plane intersects with the eastern half of the true horizon.

The first house in a natal chart begins at the Ascendant, zero degrees. The houses then distribute counterclockwise, each associated with different life sectors.

The placement of houses in a natal chart usually depends on a person's birth time. A slight time deviation can shift the Ascendant and other houses. This, in turn, affects the position of planets within the houses and their influence interpretation.

The beginning of a house is called the cusp (this term can also refer to the transition point between two zodiac signs or houses).

Each house connects with various aspects of our lives, from personality, finances, communication, to spirituality, career, and dreams. For example, the first house relates to personal identity and appearance, the second to material values and self-esteem, and the tenth to career and public status. Houses one through six are believed to directly influence a person's personality, while houses seven through twelve impact their social life.
  • First House – personality, beginnings, self-expression, first impression, physical appearance, and general life orientation. Planets in this house can significantly impact character and appearance.
  • Second House – material resources (potential income sources, financial attitude), self-esteem.
  • Third House – communication, learning ability, relationships with close relatives, short-distance travel.
  • Fourth House – home, family, roots, inner world, emotional security, relationships with parents, especially the mother.
  • Fifth House – creativity, self-expression, romance, relationships with children, pleasures.
  • Sixth House – work, attitude towards labor, health, daily routine.
  • Seventh House – relationships, marriage, qualities sought in a partner, open enemies.
  • Eighth House – transformation, death, regeneration, sexuality, joint resources.
  • Ninth House – personal philosophy, higher education, law, religion, long-distance travel, interests and growth opportunities in these areas.
  • Tenth House – career, public status, ambitions, professional achievements.
  • Eleventh House – friendship, social circle, public goals and groups, personal hopes and ambitions.
  • Twelfth House – subconscious, hidden things, hidden enemies, isolation, inner fears and talents, self-destructive tendencies.

House Systems

Astrology uses various systems to divide the celestial sphere into houses. The most common ones are:
  • Placidus System: A traditional system where the ascendant and houses are determined by the time it takes for a planet to move from one angle of the chart to another.
  • Koch System: Similar to the previous one, but it uses different mathematical calculations based on birth coordinates.
  • Equal House System: In this system, all houses have an equal share of the celestial sphere, 30 degrees each, starting from the ascendant sign.
  • Whole Sign System: Each zodiac sign completely forms one house, starting from the ascendant sign.

The Influence of the Zodiac Sign on the House

Astrologers believe that the positions of the planets at a person's birth significantly affect their character and destiny. A planet in a specific house activates and colors the aspects of life associated with that house with its energies and qualities.

Each house is also associated with a specific zodiac sign, which brings its unique energies to the horoscope interpretation. The sign ruling the house amplifies the energies of the planets in the context of that particular house:
  • Aries – initiative, energy, and a drive for new beginnings. In any house, Aries motivates action, courage, and leadership.
  • Taurus – stability, patience, and persistence. In the house, Taurus emphasizes comfort, financial security, and life's pleasures.
  • Gemini – changeability, sociability, and curiosity. This sign enlivens communication in all its forms, stimulates intellectual interests, and encourages many short trips.
  • Cancer in the house emphasizes emotions, family, and home comfort, care, and emotional support.
  • Leo brings warmth, generosity, and creativity, fostering self-expression and romantic relationships.
  • Virgo emphasizes attention to details, service, and health care, bringing order, cleanliness, and a striving for perfection.
  • Libra – harmony, partnership, and fairness. They emphasize relationships, aesthetics, and the search for balance.
  • Scorpio, passion, transformation, secrecy, sexuality.
  • Sagittarius – optimism, a quest for knowledge, and a love of travel, fostering education, philosophical pursuits, and international connections.
  • Capricorn – discipline, responsibility, and a drive for achievements. In the house, Capricorn emphasizes career ambitions, structure, and management.
  • Aquarius – innovation, friendship, and independence, collective goals, unconventional ideas.
  • Pisces – intuition, compassion, and spirituality. In the house, Pisces focuses on creativity, dreams, and a tendency to escape reality through art or spiritual practices.
