Biography of Timothée Chalamet

"My career has never followed a straight path, it has been full of zigzags," claims Timothée Chalamet, an American actor who received his first Oscar nomination at the age of 22 for his role as a teenage homosexual in the poignant drama "Call Me by Your Name". That same year, he worked with Woody Allen ("A Rainy Day in New York") and Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird"). Critics call him one of the most promising actors of his generation: starting with independent cinema, he now stars in Netflix's box office projects and played the lead role in Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster "Dune" (2021).

Childhood and Family

Timothée was born in Manhattan, in the Hell's Kitchen district, a name derived from the rampant crime that prevailed there since the early 19th century. However, it is now a prestigious area where businessmen and representatives of the creative intelligentsia prefer to reside, to which the young actor's family belongs.

His father, Marc Chalamet, is of French origin, a translator, and editor for UNICEF. His mother, Nicole Flender, is an American with Jewish, Russian, and Austrian roots, a former dancer, and Broadway actress. Timothée's grandfather is a renowned screenwriter, his uncle, Rodman Flender, is an actor and director, his aunt, a television producer, and his older sister, Pauline, is a ballet dancer living in Paris.

In his early childhood, Timothée often visited his father's homeland, where he learned to play football well and mastered the French language. As a teenager, like many of his peers, he was fond of rap and even managed to present a statistics project as a musical recitative. His teacher disapproved of the young man's creativity, but his classmates were delighted. Despite such antics (this was far from the only one), the teachers at LaGuardia School highly appreciated Timothée's creative abilities and considered him one of the best students.

In 2013, Chalamet passed his final exams excellently and enrolled in Columbia University, where he studied for only one year. Later, he became a student at the Gallatin School of Individual Study at New York University.

Acting Career

Timothée started appearing in films and commercials from an early age, which is not surprising given his lineage. His first noticeable role was an episode in the series "Law & Order," and his full-fledged debut can be considered his work in the spy series "Homeland," which won several prestigious film awards. The 16-year-old actor played the role of Finn Walden, the vice president's son with rebellious tendencies.

Soon, he made his theater debut, playing the teenager Nicholas in the production "The Talls."

In 2014, Chalamet could be seen in the role of the main character's son in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi film "Interstellar." The character's father was played by Matthew McConaughey, who became a good friend of the young actor after filming.

That same year, the young actor appeared in the series "Worst Friends," presenting a young version of one of the key characters named Sam. This was followed by roles in films like "The Adderall Diaries," "Love the Coopers," and "Miss Stevens," but all of them went unnoticed.

The breakthrough came in 2017, when the film "Call Me by Your Name" was released. Timothée played a high school student named Elio, who fell in love with a young scientist Oliver (Armie Hammer) during his holidays.
At the casting, the boy was asked if he could play the piano. He had been practicing it for 12 years, so he immediately said: 'Yes'. Having received the role, Timothée realised that he had forgotten everything. He had to take daily lessons from an Italian musician for a month.
The film about unconventional relationships was highly appreciated in cinematographic circles and was nominated for an "Oscar" in four categories, one of which, "Best Actor," could have gone to 22-year-old Chalamet, but went to Gary Oldman for his work in the drama "Darkest Hour."

2017 was also marked by another performance of the young actor – the role of a high school student, hipster-anarchist Kyle in the coming-of-age film "Lady Bird" with Saoirse Ronan. The film also contended for the golden statuette.

The fate of another notable film featuring Timothée remains uncertain. Woody Allen, the director of the film "A Rainy Day in New York," is again threatened with lawsuits over allegations of sexual harassment.

In 2018, the promising actor starred in the film "Beautiful Boy," where he portrayed a drug-addicted teenager trying to overcome his harmful addiction. The narrative is conducted from the perspective of his father (Steve Carell).

In early 2018, it was also announced that Timothée Chalamet would play the lead role in the Netflix historical drama "The King," where he would portray Henry V. At the same time, the director of the drama "Call Me by Your Name," Luca Guadagnino, announced the continuation of his film featuring the same actors.

In September 2021, the premiere of the new adaptation of the novel "Dune" finally took place, in which the main character, Paul Atreides, leading the revolution of the oppressed Fremen people on the desert planet Arrakis, was played by Timothée Chalamet.

In an interview timed to coincide with the release of the film, Timothée wondered why he recently only got roles of people who bear the responsibility for saving humanity. In his opinion, the director of "Dune," Denis Villeneuve, saw in him a man seasoned by experience. This is the second meeting of Chalamet with the director – he really wanted to work together and tried out for his film "Prisoners" (2013), but was then too young and inexperienced.

But he was most curious to play Paul, a character forced to go from a boy to a national leader burdened with supernatural abilities in a short time. But he had to hastily finish reading "Dune" before the audition, even though he knew that Frank Herbert's novel had influenced both the "Star Wars" universe and even "Avatar."

"Dune" is planned as a duology, so viewers will see the second part in the foreseeable future. The actor also promises to join the ranks of favourite actors of director Wes Anderson, who directed him in his film "The French Dispatch."

In early 2018, Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence publicly admitted her attraction to the young actor, highlighting his talent and sex appeal.

In April 2023, the DeuxMoi site, which publishes celebrity gossip, wrote about a romance between Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner. It claimed that sparks flew between them as early as January - at least, since they spent the beginning of the year together on vacation. Both managed to keep the relationship secret until September when paparazzi captured their kiss at a concert. In November, they made their first public appearance together - at the WSJ Magazine 2023 Innovator Awards in New York.

Timothée Chalamet Now

Timothée Chalamet has landed the lead role as the quirky chocolate factory owner in the new reboot of the film about Willy Wonka. The film was directed by Paul King, the man behind "Paddington". Chalamet confessed that he had been a fan of King's work even before "Paddington", so he did not hesitate for a moment to accept this role, especially since Wonka is one of his favorite characters.

The musical "Wonka" was released in late 2023, before Christmas. Unlike the 2005 film, the focus of the film is on Wonka's backstory, his life before he became a world-famous confectioner. Chalamet was very excited about the result:
...I want viewers to feel the optimistic and positive attitude characteristic of young Willy, who does not take 'no' for an answer and refuses to give up, even when the whole world is against him.
