Bradley Cooper's Biography

Bradley Cooper is one of the most vibrant figures in Hollywood. Many of his acting colleagues say about him: "I've never met someone more charismatic than him!". His sparkling performance, attractive looks, and a touch of luck have all contributed to the American actor's creative success. His most famous role is the unfortunate groom Phil from the comedy "The Hangover", but his filmography also includes other outstanding works, not just from the comedy genre.

Childhood and Youth

The future idol of millions, Bradley Cooper, was born on January 5, 1975, to parents Gloria and Charles Cooper. The actor's bloodline interestingly combines Irish (from his stockbroker father's side) and Italian (from his mother's side) heritage. Perhaps, this "explosive mix" of highly temperamental nationalities later became the foundation for the progressively developing talent of the young man.

As a child, Bradley Cooper was diagnosed with cholesteatoma of the middle ear. Doctors predicted total hearing loss, but after a series of surgeries (Bradley had to undergo several operations until he reached adulthood), he managed to maintain some hearing - since then, he had to swim with special earplugs.

As Bradley Cooper recalls, the desire to become a serious dramatic actor emerged when he was twelve after watching David Lynch's iconic movie The Elephant Man. This film made such a strong impression on him that the teenager delved into the history of cinema, read biographies of actors, and joined a theater club.

After finishing school, he enrolled in Villanova, a Catholic university (Bradley's father was a devout Catholic and insisted on this choice). However, he transferred to Georgetown University after a year. But the strict rules of the Catholic university stifled the creative guy, and he decided to take a student loan of seventy thousand dollars to get into the New York Drama School.

Interestingly, Bradley Cooper chose The Elephant Man once again for his graduation thesis. Later, he joined the ranks of the university's proud alumni.

Career Beginnings

Out of all his classmates, Bradley Cooper was the first to get a personal agent. The agent quickly found him work: he appeared in the popular TV show "Sex and the City", playing one of the countless boyfriends of Carrie Bradshaw – a character played by Sarah Jessica Parker. After that, he worked in "Law & Order", "Wet Hot American Summer", and "The Street". Bradley Cooper gained a small portion of fame after starring in the TV show "Alias", which was warmly received by audiences and critics alike and even won several prestigious awards, including a Golden Globe.

For a while, the actor hosted the documentary show "Globe Trekker", where he covered travels to Croatia and Peru.

At one point in Bradley Cooper's career, a period of stagnation set in. Serious roles were scarce and unplanned, and the actor gradually became addicted to alcohol and drugs. Few could name the movies he had starred in, but everyone knew how he had deliberately smashed his head into the concrete floor at a Hollywood party. Twice.

At some point, the actor realized that he couldn't continue like this. "I was scared that I would simply destroy my life at this rate!" he recalled. By the end of 2004, he had pulled himself together and landed a role in the comedy "Wedding Crashers". The film starred Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, with Bradley Cooper playing the arrogant fiancé of Rachel McAdams's character. The actor considers this role to be the first significant one in his filmography.

Then, in 2005, the TV show "Kitchen Confidential" premiered, featuring Bradley Cooper in the lead role. Its plot revolves around a boisterous chef named Jack, a character bearing many similarities to Cooper's not-so-distant past, who opens a restaurant where he can do whatever he pleases.

In 2008, the actor starred in his first horror movie – "The Midnight Meat Train". He took on the role of a photographer, who, in his efforts to break into the "big leagues", ventures into the subway hoping to capture a compelling shot. Gradually, his character discovers something strange in the subway's back alleys and starts a photo hunt that leads viewers to the most unexpected conclusion.

"The Hangover"

In 2009, the actor's filmography was enriched by the boisterous comedy "The Hangover," which subsequently became one of his most recognizable works.

The plot was simple: Phil and his two friends wake up in the morning with a terrible hangover, remembering absolutely nothing from last night's events. Moreover, their fourth friend is missing, they are in another state, and the wedding starts in a few hours. The quartet of actors - Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha - managed to turn a comedy with a seemingly unpromising title into one of the finest comedic masterpieces of recent years, according to many viewers.

The comedy, one could say, elevated Cooper from the rank of secondary actors to the category of A-list celebrities, whose fees are counted in millions of dollars. After "The Hangover," several comedies followed one after another. But not all were warmly received by the audience. For instance, the movie "All About Steve" (2009), where a crazy crossword puzzle maker, played by Sandra Bullock, chases Cooper's character across the country, not only received mediocre audience and critic reviews, but also earned Cooper his first Golden Raspberry Award (for "Worst Screen Couple").

Films such as "Valentine's Day" and "Brother's Justice" also received a lukewarm reception, while the adventure comedy "The A-Team" was applauded in theaters. "Filming this movie was like an adventure," the actor recalled, remembering the first time he fired an M4 rifle. But, as Bradley admits, he is nothing like his character Faceman - in real life, the actor is very much a homebody.

For his role in "The A-Team," Bradley Cooper trained in the gym for 4 hours a day and followed a strict diet. "I don't want to call myself lazy, but such a regimen is for athletes, not actors," Cooper stated, adding that he returned to his usual routine of moderate workouts to maintain his shape after the filming ended.

Further Career

Seemingly tired of the comedy genre, the actor began to appear more frequently in serious dramatic films from 2010. His filmography was enriched with "Limitless," a psychological thriller about an unsuccessful writer who takes a drug that sharpens his intellect to unimaginable heights.

He then starred in "The Words" (a "triple" dramatic story about a writer and his book) and the crime melodrama "The Place Beyond the Pines."

In 2012, another significant film with Bradley Cooper, "Silver Linings Playbook," was released. The actor played the role of a former teacher named Pat Solitano, suffering from a mental disorder. This film was a turning point in the celebrity's career and (almost unanimously agreed by critics) put Bradley Cooper among the strong dramatic actors. For his transformation, the actor was nominated for BAFTA, Oscar, and Golden Globe awards. After the premiere, tabloids began to spread rumors that Bradley Cooper was dating Jennifer Lawrence, who played the leading female role in the film. However, both actors denied these rumors.

In 2014, the actor participated in the filming of the blockbuster "Guardians of the Galaxy" with Chris Pratt, but Bradley Cooper himself was not in the frame - he voiced the sarcastic talking raccoon named Rocket.

. In 2016, Bradley Cooper was busy filming the comedy "War Dogs," appearing there as a guest star. He also voiced the raccoon in the sequel to "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2017) (and the raccoon's best friend, the anthropomorphic tree Groot, was voiced by Vin Diesel).

In the fall of 2018, the premiere of Cooper's first directorial work "A Star Is Born" took place. According to the plot, Lady Gaga is a Hollywood starlet, who is helped on her way to fame by an alcoholic producer played by Bradley himself. The debut was successful, and both actors were nominated for an Oscar.

In total, the drama "A Star Is Born" received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture of the Year. However, it only won one statuette ("Best Song").

In the same year, viewers saw Cooper in the role of an antagonist with a human face. He played a policeman looking for a drug courier, not suspecting that the dangerous criminal transporting kilograms of heroin across the border with Mexico is a sweet old man played by Clint Eastwood (who also directed the movie "The Mule").

Encouraged by the success of his debut film, Cooper immediately announced the beginning of work on his next film "Maestro," in which the main roles will be played by Bradley himself and Carey Mulligan. The biographical film dedicated to composer Leonard Bernstein was presented in September 2023 at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for the "Golden Lion."

An interesting experience was filming in the movie "Nightmare Alley" from visionary director Guillermo del Toro. Cooper's character is a former magician Stan Carlisle, convincing the wealthy of his ability to communicate with the dead. But something went wrong, and he returns to the joyless life of a carnival magician and gradually becomes an alcoholic. Cooper was also listed among the producers of the film.

Bradley Cooper's Personal Life

Thanks to his attractive appearance and remarkable charisma, Bradley Cooper has always easily won the hearts of America's leading beauties. In 2006, he married actress Jennifer Esposito, although their marriage only lasted four months.

His next notable romance was marked by his appearance in the movie "Case 39". After filming this movie, the actor was often seen in public with his on-screen partner Renée Zellweger. Soon, the stars officially announced themselves as a couple. Despite the five-year age difference (Renée was older than her boyfriend), they seemed to be an amazingly sweet pair. Alas, at that time, Cooper, who had just recently gained global popularity, was afraid of serious relationships and did not want to bind himself with loud vows of love and fidelity, and in 2011 they announced their breakup.

However, it seems that the star of "Bridget Jones's Diary" left an indelible scar on Bradley Cooper's heart. His subsequent relationship with the beauty Zoe Saldana proved to be short-lived.

On the other hand, he dated the beauty Suki Waterhouse for more than a year and a half. According to the press, their breakup was caused by Bradley's constant communication with Zellweger. Suki got tired of being jealous of her lover, who could disappear for several hours and then admit that he spent them with Renée.

In April 2015, Bradley Cooper started dating Irina Shayk, a Russian model and former flame of Cristiano Ronaldo.

In 2018, Bradley tried his hand at directing, casting Lady Gaga in the lead female role. He himself became Gaga's on-screen partner. It seems their on-screen romance turned into a real-life one. Of course, few believed these rumors, as who in their right mind would cheat on Irina Shayk? The first warning sign emerged in February 2019, at the Oscars ceremony, where Cooper arrived with Shayk but openly flirted with Gaga in front of Irina.

In the summer of the same year, Shayk moved out of Cooper's Hollywood mansion and relocated with their daughter to Manhattan. The reasons for the star couple's breakup remain unclear. Rumors that Lady Gaga had moved in to Cooper's place after Shayk left were not confirmed.

Bradley and Irina amicably agreed on custody of their little girl Lea. The father regularly sees his daughter, and in October 2019 he introduced her to the public at the Mark Twain Literature Award's red carpet.

In 2022, Cooper had a brief romance with Dianna Agron, and in 2023 he started dating supermodel Gigi Hadid. Despite a 20-year age difference, the couple is very happy. According to insiders, they have many mutual friends (which is how they met, at a party with common friends), young daughters, and a similar sense of humor, but they try not to rush things and simply enjoy each other's company.

Bradley Cooper Now

Aside from his directorial ambitions, which did not arise out of nowhere - both of Cooper's films received high praise from critics and audiences - Cooper continues to voice Rocket Raccoon, who appeared in the third part of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and the series "I Am Groot." Additionally, he starred in the adventure film set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," where he played the halfling Marlamin, who is in love with a giantess.

In the summer of 2023, it was revealed that Cooper is working on his third film. The working title of the film is "Is This Thing On?" The main roles will be played by Cooper himself and Will Arnett, with whom Bradley has been acquainted for about 20 years. Moreover, Arnett once helped his friend overcome alcohol addiction. "It was Will who told me about alcohol dependency. I'll never forget. It completely changed my life," Cooper recalled.
